saying ?yes? when students ask ?can i . . .? ? Landscapes of the ...

I teach a variety of writing classes at UC Berkeley?two that fulfill the University?s Reading and Composition Requirement, an intermediate and an advanced writing class. The intermediate class?CW 105: Finding Your Voice with Others?is one in which students read current articles?academic and journalism?as well as a little theory?Marshall McLuhan, Walter Ong, David Post, Lawrence Lessig, Sherry Turkle, Anne Wysocki, etc?about new media and technology. Multimodal forms of expression are required, and students write reflective journals with each project submitted, thinking about how the use of technology affects the language we use. And they also think about design related issues: color, shape, image, platform.

One purpose of the course is to help students who have fulfilled the R&C Requirement continue to develop academic reading and writing strategies as they learn to hear, appreciate and deploy their own voices. Voice is a slippery concept. Most writing books and manuals take a kind of Grammar Girl approach, which is fine. It?s useful as a starting place. But students enrolled in 105 have read something like this already. Probably more than once.

While 105 is not a creative writing class (what kind of writing is not, in some sense, creative? question for another day), I do try to approach the concept of voice in a way that is about something more than style (while it is also, of course, related to style?see the concept begin to slip and slide?!). I use material that you might more often find in a creative writing course to get the discussion rolling. For example, I might use some passages from Finding Your Writer?s Voice, by Thaisa Frank and Dorothy Wall (a book I love): ?Your voice is actually a very ordinary thing. It is just who you are, projected artistically. It is often linked to your speaking voice, and your breath, and the rhythms and sense of pace that you draw on when you are too absorbed in what you are saying to listen to yourself from a distance. It is also linked to your body, the language or dialect you spoke in childhood, and whatever naturally interests you. Your voice is how you write when you don?t have time to be elegant? (5). And later from the same chapter: ?A search for voice must always involve a willingness to experience what you already know in a new light? (7).

And in 105 that new light often shines from new media. Students are using tools they have, for the most part, never used. They are writing in public. They are taking risks. And so when a student says to me, can I try, can I use, can have an extension, can I use I (yes, dear god, please use I?use it wisely, don?t over use it, but do not let writing at the University rob you of I). I say yes. We might have a brief discussion (depending on the question), but usually I say yes, try it; yes, you can turn it in late; yes yes yes.

I?m not an easy teacher, but I try to be a generous one.

How is yes rewarded? (okay, I?ll confess, sometimes it?s not; sometimes I should have probably said no: live and learn)

One of the tools students use is Prezi. Here is the product of Ylan Ha?s great imagination, a lot of ?can I? and a lot of ?yes.? The Iron Dove #1

Oppo BDP-103

If you want to put a lot of effort into your home theater, you need to be prepared to spend some money. While you can get a perfectly fine, high-quality Blu-ray player like the Editors' Choice LG BP620 for a relatively low price, it won't necessarily integrate well with your high-end, AV receiver-equipped, HDTV-and-projector custom installation. For a Blu-ray player worthy of a private theater, you need to step up and get ready to cut a hefty check. Last year, we reviewed the Oppo BDP-93 and were impressed enough to give the massive, expensive Blu-ray player our Editors' Choice. Oppo has since replaced it with the BDP-103; this $499 (direct) player edges out its predecessor with new features while delivering the same great performance and build quality, making it our new top pick for high-end Blu-ray players.

Sturdy, Thoughtful Design
At 3.1 by 16.8 by 12.2 inches (HWD) and 10.8 pounds, the BDP-103 is a beast compared with lower-end Blu-ray players, but slightly slimmer and lighter than the BDP-93. The chassis is constructed of sturdy metal, with a brushed black finish. The front is flat and sleek, covered by a handful of scattered, round buttons including Power, Eject, and playback controls. The drive tray sits in a plastic rectangle in the center of the faceplate, flanked by an informative LED display on the left and an eject button on the right. The display shows the source of the content you're viewing, like Network for DLNA media, and even shows the status of your firmware downloads when you update the system. It's a small detail, but one not often seen.

A USB port and HDMI input with MHL sit just below the display and tray rectangle. The back of the player is loaded with connections, including two HDMI outputs, 7.1-channel analog audio outputs, two USB ports, optical audio, coaxial audio, Ethernet, HDMI input, infrared blaster, and RS-232C for integrating the player with a control system. At least one of the USB ports will likely be occupied by the included Wi-Fi adapter, which has a USB extension for placing the adapter itself in a more reception-friendly location if the player is in an awkward place.

The remote is thick, sturdy, and backlit, with a reasonably sensible button layout. Dedicated Netflix and Vudu buttons let you access online services, and the control pad is round and easy to find blindly. The only problem is the Home button, which sits next to the number pad and feels identical to nearly every button on that part of the remote. Since that's the main way to access the player's home menu, it's easy to fumble when you're getting used to the remote. You can also use a free Android app to control the player from your smartphone or tablet, and an iOS version of the app is planned.

Features Galore
As expected given the price, the BDP-103 is loaded with features. It can play SACD and DVD-Audio discs, along with a host of video and audio file formats, including lossless and FLAC. It can play 3D Blu-ray discs and convert 2D video content into 3D (even if that conversion is always inferior to a native 3D source). It can even upscale to 4K resolution, so if you're one of the very few who have the as-yet-unavailable-to-consumers next generation of high definition displays, you're covered. You also get access to a? wide selection of online services, including Netflix, Vudu, Pandora, YouTube, Film Fresh, and Picasa. For cinephiles, a source video mode lets you output video to a video processor without performing any processing itself, and a vertical stretch mode fits movies to a 2.35:1 anamorphic display.

Oppo BDP-103 Back

Performance
Blazingly fast, the BDP-103 loaded Black Swan, a feature-rich Blu-ray with BD-Live, in an average of 23.2 seconds, edging out the BDP-93 by 2.2 seconds. It beats out the load speeds of the midrange Editors' Choice LG BP620 by solid 3.8 seconds. It isn't a massive leap in speed from lower-end Blu-ray players, but it's certainly a bit faster by a few seconds compared to most. The only player that edges it out is the Panasonic DMP-BDT220's? ability to load The Sound of Music 25th?Anniversary Edition in just 22.3 seconds, and that's too close to notice much of a difference. The BDP-103 also offers connectivity and video-processing features that BDT220 doesn't touch.

We test Blu-ray video processing with the HQV Blu-ray benchmark disc, and the BDP-103 passed all tests with flying colors. It handled both 30fps video and 24fps film footage easily, and horizontal motion showed a minimum of tearing. Image processing artifacts were nearly nonexistent, and noise was slightly smoothed out without hurting detail.

The Oppo BDP-103 is just like its predecessor: big, expensive, and, well, excellent. It adds 2D-to-3D conversion, 4K upscaling, MHL HDMI inputs, and a handful of other features to an already top-notch high-end Blu-ray player that can handle any format you throw at it. It's pricey at $500, but if you want a player that can do everything and really complement your complicated home theater system, this is the one to beat, replacing the BDP-93 as our Editors' Choice for high-end Blu-ray players. If you don't have a huge, expensive HDTV and sound system and can't justify spending that much on a Blu-ray player, the LG BP620 is still quite a full-featured player. The BP620 doesn't have the custom home theater bells and whistles of the BDP-103, but is available for just $150 and remains our favorite midrange choice.

Nokia sues RIM for breach of contract

HELSINKI (AP) ? Nokia Corp. said Wednesday that it is suing Research In Motion, the maker of the BlackBerry, for breach of contract in Britain, the United States and Canada over cellular patents the two companies agreed on nine years ago.

The struggling Finnish cellphone maker agreed with RIM in 2003 on a license that covers patents on "standards-essential" technologies for mobile devices. RIM has since claimed the license should also have covered patents for non-essential parts and it filed arbitration proceedings with the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce in March 2011.

Earlier this month, the Arbitration Institute of Stockholm Chamber of Commerce ruled against RIM's claims.

Nokia said it filed a suit earlier this week to enforce the tribunal's ruling, which says that the Canadian company is "not entitled to manufacture or sell products compatible with the WLAN Standard without first agreeing with Nokia on the royalty to be paid."

RIM said it "will respond to Nokia's petitions in due course."

"Research In Motion has worked hard to develop its leading-edge BlackBerry technology and has built an industry-leading intellectual property portfolio of its own," said RIM spokeswoman Crystal Roberts.

Peter Misek, an analyst at Jefferies in New York, said Nokia's filings mean that RIM likely will end up paying royalties of $2 to $5 per phone.

Nokia is among leading patent holders in the wireless industry. Major manufacturers of phones and wireless equipment are increasingly turning to patent litigation as they jockey for an edge to expand their share of the rapidly growing smartphone market.

Last year, Nokia received a $565 million royalty payment from Apple Inc. to settle long-standing patent disputes. It also has filed claims in the United States and Germany alleging that products from HTC Corp. and Viewsonic Corp. infringe a number of its patents.

Nokia shares closed down 1 percent at ?2.53 in Helsinki on Wednesday.

As Housing Market Improves, Forget Homebuilders And Watch ...

MINYANVILLE ORIGINAL Tuesday?s October New Home Sales report generally confirmed that the housing market is improving. October sales followed a sharp rise in September (Sept. = up 5.7% to 389,000). The September and October reports also show that supply is very tight and actually is limiting sales. The improvements in the housing data, coupled with the delay of implementation of the Basel III rules ? which would lower the value of real estate assets as bank capital ? is good news for the sector. ?Home prices and home sales are now at a two-year high.

But investors are wise to be cautious, especially when it comes to investing in homebuilder stocks, which as a group, have already gained over 60% in the past 12 months. DR Horton (NYSE:DHI) underwhelmed investors with its latest earnings report. Toll Brothers (NYSE:TOL) warned of ?bumps? ahead.
    ?
According to Bloomberg, as of September, foreclosure inventories continue to remain near record highs, with almost 4.1% of all active mortgages delinquent, although serious delinquencies (over 90 days) have been dropping. Moreover, Corelogic (NYSE:CLGX), a provider of consumer, financial and property information, reported that ?the reduction in foreclosure volumes is to some degree being facilitated by the rising popularity of alternative resolution methods, such as short sales and loan modification,? said CoreLogic CEO Anand Nallathambi.
    ?
Politics will also play a role in housing. As senators and congresspeople negotiate a compromise deal on the fiscal cliff that will (somehow) cut spending and raise taxes, formerly sacrosanct deductions could be at risk, specifically, the allowable mortgage interest deduction.?? The Romney/Ryan team suggested just that: a $25,000 cap on mortgage interest deduction. At 4.5% interest, mortgages over $550,000 could be at risk, a big number, yes, but the inclusion of home equity lines of credit, and interest paid on second homes, could reduce it quickly, and could provide quite a headwind to the real estate market.??
    ?
From my point of view and against all odds, the homebuilders have had their run, and there are better opportunities to be found.
    ?
One of the cardinal rules of successful investing is to focus on facts and not on how you feel. Accordingly, I can?t ignore the improving housing and broader economic data. There?s an opportunity there, it?s just not among the homebuilders, but rather, in my view, the home improvement sector.? Specifically, Lowes Corp (NYSE:LOW) and Home Depot (NYSE:HD) -- the latter of which just reported better-than-expected earnings -- are growing at an impressive rate, pay a 1.8% dividend each, and in the current politically muddled environment, could be the most direct beneficiaries of continued improvement in the housing market.
    ?
The consensus forecast on compound annual earnings per share growth for Lowes, starting in 2013 and forecasting to 2016 is 20.5%.? For Home Depot, the consensus forecast for the same period is 14.5%.? Interestingly, and germane to my point, there are no three year forecasts (to 2016) for any of the major homebuilders.?

Giant black hole could upset galaxy evolution models

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? A group of astronomers led by Remco van den Bosch from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) have discovered a black hole that could shake the foundations of current models of galaxy evolution. At 17 billion times the mass of the Sun, its mass is much greater than current models predict -- in particular since the surrounding galaxy is comparatively small. This could be the most massive black hole found to date.

To the best of our astronomical knowledge, almost every galaxy should contain in its central region what is called a supermassive black hole: a black hole with a mass between that of hundreds of thousands and billions of Suns. The best-studied super-massive black hole sits in the center of our home galaxy, the Milky Way, with a mass of about four million Suns.

For the masses of galaxies and their central black holes, an intriguing trend has emerged: a direct relationship between the mass of a galaxy's black hole and that of the galaxy's stars.

Typically, the black hole mass is a tiny fraction of the galaxy's total mass. But now a search led by Remco van den Bosch (MPIA) has discovered a massive black hole that could upset the accepted relationship between black hole mass and galaxy mass, which plays a key role in all current theories of galaxy evolution. The observations used the Hobby-Eberly Telescope and existing images from the Hubble Space Telescope.

With a mass 17 billion times that of the Sun, the newly discovered black hole in the center of the disk galaxy NGC 1277 might even be the biggest known black hole of all: the mass of the current record holder is estimated to lie between 6 and 37 billion solar masses (McConnell et al. 2011); if the true value lies towards the lower end of that range, NGC 1277 breaks the record. At the least, NGC 1277 harbors the second-biggest known black hole.

The big surprise is that the black hole mass for NGC 1277 amounts to 14% of the total galaxy mass, instead of usual values around 0,1%. This beats the old record by more than a factor 10. Astronomers would have expected a black hole of this size inside blob-like ("elliptical") galaxies ten times larger. Instead, this black hole sits inside a fairly small disk galaxy.

Is this surprisingly massive black hole a freak accident? Preliminary analysis of additional data suggests otherwise -- so far, the search has uncovered five additional galaxies that are comparatively small, yet, going by first estimates, seemed to harbor unusually large black holes too. More definite conclusions have to await detailed images of these galaxies.

If the additional candidates are confirmed, and there are indeed more black holes like this, astronomers will need to rethink fundamentally their models of galaxy evolution. In particular, they will need to look at the early universe: The galaxy hosting the new black hole appears to have formed more than 8 billion years ago, and does not appear to have changed much since then. Whatever created this giant black hole must have happened a long time ago.

Syria launches air strikes as combat rages in Damascus

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian war planes attacked towns in the country's north and east and killed at least five civilians in a strike on an olive oil press as fighting raged in the capital Damascus on Tuesday, opposition activists said.

Rebels battled government forces in the Damascus suburb of Kfar Souseh, on the edge of the center of the capital, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based monitoring group.

The latest fighting followed recent battlefield gains by the rebels in their struggle to topple President Bashar al-Assad although it was far from clear if a strategic breakthrough was likely any time soon.

Syrian state television said that two people were killed and four wounded in a "terrorist suicide car bomb" in Artouz, near Damascus. The Observatory said the explosion was caused by a car bomb next to a military police checkpoint.

Near the Old City, a second car bomb killed one person and blew the legs off another man, according to opposition activist Samir al-Shami. He said it was unclear if the car, a white Toyota, was rigged by Assad loyalists or rebels.

The rebels also shot down a military helicopter on Tuesday, according to video footage posted on YouTube which showed a missile hitting the aircraft.

The Local Coordinating Committee opposition group said the Free Syrian Army had downed a helicopter near the Sheikh Suleiman army base, 30 km (20 miles) northwest of the contested city of Aleppo.

Combat also took place in the Baba Amr district of Homs city, an area that was overrun by government troops in February, as well as in Aleppo, Deir al-Zor, Deraa, Idlib province and Hama province, the Observatory said.

A government jet dropped barrel bombs - cylinders packed with explosives and petrol - at the Abu Hilal olive oil press, 2 km (1.2 miles) west of Idlib city, activist Tareq Abdelhaq said.

At least five people were killed and five wounded in the attack, the Observatory said. Abdelhaq said at least 20 were killed and 50 wounded.

The victims were civilians waiting to press their olives for oil, according to activists, who acknowledged rebel fighters were in the area.

An estimated 40,000 people have been killed in Syria since March last year when protests inspired by the Arab Spring broke out against Assad, whose family has ruled autocratically for four decades. Assad has relied on fighter jets, helicopters and artillery to subdue the revolt, which started peacefully but has become a full-scale civil war.

Rebels have captured at least five army and air force installations in the past 10 days, putting pressure on Assad's forces in Aleppo and Idlib and the eastern oil region of Deir al-Zor.

The opposition are calling for international military aid, particularly against air attacks, but Western powers who support the uprising are wary of radical Islamist units among the rebels.

However, some anti-aircraft equipment has been seized from captured army bases.

The government also launched air strikes on Deir al-Zor city and on the strategic town of Maraat al-Numan in Idlib province on Tuesday.

The rebel takeover of Maarat al-Numan last month effectively cut the main north-south highway, a route for Assad to move troops from the Damascus to Aleppo, Syria's largest city where rebels have taken a foothold.

Most foreign powers have condemned Assad, and Britain, France and Gulf countries have recognized an umbrella opposition group, the Syrian National Coalition, as the sole representative of the Syrian people.

But Assad has been able to rely on his allies, especially regional powerhouse Iran, to withstand the international challenge. Russia and China have also vetoed three United Nations Security Council resolutions that condemn Assad.

Nonprofit news website ProPublica reported yesterday that Russia sent 240 tonnes of banks notes to Damascus this summer. U.S. and European sanctions include a ban on minting Syrian banknotes.

Helsinki Design Lab: Addressing society's wicked challenges ...

    By Geraldine Cahill @ MaRS

    November 27, 2012

    ?

It may seem odd to start a blog post with talk of toasters, but in a conversation with Bryan Boyer this month, that is where the discussion took us. Bryan is the strategic design lead for Helsinki Design Lab, a division of Finnish Innovation Fund?Sitra, and he reminded those assembled at the MaRS Global Leadership event on November 13 that once humans developed the capacity to generate electricity, all sorts of inventions became possible.

Somebody at some time in the last century thought of a new, easier and faster way of cooking bread. Sure, this inventor thought about what the device might look like and how it would function. What?s more interesting, though, is that this inventor had to think about something that had never been done before, something that would radically redefine the way people thought about bread. The toaster would produce new meaning and new beliefs around what was possible.

Sitra hopes to advance society?s ability to cope with complex issues such as climate change and demographic shifts by developing strategic design as a tool to better conceptualize and respond to so-called ?wicked? challenges.

In using strategic design, Helsinki Design Lab has the potential to introduce new products or services to the city, changing the ways people interact with it and the values and beliefs they associate with it.

?We?re at the fuzzy front end of innovation,? says Bryan. ?We are looking at change at a scale similar to the 1960s, but we don?t have a word for it yet.?

I like this quote from Bryan, but I would add that the current time period ? as people look at ways to address these systemic, complex challenges ? is far more dramatic than the 1960s. It is a culmination of multiple crises and myriad opportunities that could either defeat us or radically shift the ways in which societies operate.

Social Innovation Generation?and MaRS are also very interested in exploring the various ways that design thinking and systems thinking can be applied to Canada?s wicked challenges, and Bryan?s visit gave us the opportunity to learn from Helsinki?s experience in this work.

During his presentation Bryan referenced the following quote from Wouter Vanstiphout, a historian of architecture and, since 2009, a professor of design and politics at the Delft University of Technology:

?If you really want to change a city? then it will require re-engaging with things like public planning, for example, or re-engaging with government, or re-engaging with large-scale institutionalized developers. I think that?s where the real struggle lies, that we re-engage with these structures and these institutions, this horribly complex dark matter.?

Bryan Boyer of Helsinki Design Lab at the Global Leadership Series event

I love this articulation of the need to engage with institutions and systems in our cities and countries that are tough, uncomfortable and fuzzy. The following are some questions that arise when you start looking at re-engaging those structures and institutions to co-create solutions.

    • What does it look like when government is capable of design?
    • What does it look like when the public is engaged in reimagining their city?
    • What challenges arise when introducing new innovations into a system that millions of people interact with?

This is an exciting time for Ontario as MaRS and its partners continue development of the MaRS Solutions Lab. Every opportunity we have to learn more about what works and what does not?and what that means for a city?is valuable learning.

Bryan made me think not so much about the importance of good process and a cool lab methodology (though the Helsinki Design Lab also has those), but about the consequences of this kind of work: that fuzzy stuff of producing new meaning, new beliefs and new values, and how these things can?t be measured so much as observed and felt across generations. It?s what makes this work so important and why nobody does it alone.

Black Monday: Feds shut down 130 counterfeit websites

During the biggest online shopping day of the year with consumers estimated to spend $1.5 billion, federal officials teamed up with European law enforcement agencies to shut down over 130 websites hawking illegal counterfeit items on the internet.

Project Cyber Monday 3 marks the third year in a row that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has shut down the websites selling counterfeit goods.

"Everything from Ergobaby carriers to New Era hats, Nike sneakers, Tiffany jewelry, Oakley sunglasses and NFL jerseys, just to name a few. Even counterfeit Adobe software was for sale," ICE Director John Morton said during a conference call with reporters.

ICE's The National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center and Homeland Security Investigations partnered with EUROPOL, the European Union's law enforcement agency, to take down the 101 websites on U.S. internet servers and 31 websites with European domain names.

"Counterfeit Hermes purses, Christian Louboutin shoes and various Nike apparel, all of it fake, all of it substandard," Morton said about the quality of the knock-off items.

According to figures from the Commerce Department intellectual property (IP) theft costs U.S. industries an estimated $200 billion to $250 billion annually.

"When IP rights are violated, jobs are lost, businesses are stolen and ultimately consumers are cheated. Remember, counterfeiters care about making money and only about making money. They don't pay health care. They don't pay pensions. They don't pay taxes. They don't care about the people that work for them and they don't, frankly, care about the consumers who purchase the products," Morton said.

ICE obtained court orders to shut the websites down after investigators purchased items from the websites and verified that the items were knock-offs. No arrests were announced as part of the cyber-Monday crackdown but Morton said the cases were ongoing and could lead to prosecutions.

Along with the website seizures ICE has also worked with PayPal to attempt to seize funds associated with the websites selling the counterfeit goods. Officials will not reveal how many PayPal accounts have been seized citing the ongoing investigation but noted that accounts in excess of $175,000 have been targeted. ICE officials noted that unsuspecting consumers may not only be buying fake items, but that they are providing credit card and other financial information to fraudsters.

Important Factors To Consider When Choosing A Cloud Backup ...

?The growing number of online backup providers has made it very difficult to choose the right provider that meets your business needs. This article provides a list of essential factors to consider when choosing the right cloud backup service for your business.

    1. Simplicity

For any business, time is money. A reliable cloud backup system should offer the most simplicity when it comes to installation and use. Everything needs to be handled via a central, remote location so there is no need to install software on individual computers.

    2. Complete data recovery

It is possible that your computer system will become corrupted unexpectedly. A reliable backup service should offer complete data recovery that allows you to recover or repair your entire system from the cloud. With today's internet speed, it should only take a few hours to complete a full data recovery.

    3. Restore options

Ensure that the service also offers several restore options, such as restore from an older version, restore deleted files, and drag and drop restore. These options must be available for a mobile device or a web interface, and must also able to restore data or documents to their original location.

    4. Block level backup

If the cloud backup service does not use block level backup technology, you should avoid it. Block level backup technology breaks up larger files into smaller file blocks. This technology allows you to only backup the modified file blocks, and as a result you save both time and bandwidth.

    5. Speed

Backing up an entire computer is time-consuming. Make sure that the online backup service uses disk defragmentation technology, or other technologies to speed up the process. Keep in mind that a slow backup solution can significantly reduce productivity and efficiency.

    6. Security

Security is very important to all businesses, so make sure that the service uses at least 256-bit encryption to secure your data.

    7. Easy access

One of the main benefits of using online backup is the ability to access your data from anywhere. You should be given the ability to access your backup from mobile devices and a web interface. You must also be able to restore, view, edit and share your backed up data on the go.

    8. Performance

Many people complain that their backup service slows down their computer performance. A top class online backup should never interrupt your work. The backup service should offer different performance modes such as presentation mode, battery mode or high performance mode. The backup service must be able to detect when the computer is in high or low load, so it can adapt the backup process without reducing computer performance.

    9. Cost

Lastly, as a business owner you need to consider the cost of the?
backup solution, and should avoid cloud backup providers that have surprise or hidden fees. A flat fee would be more beneficial for businesses.? Author Bio:

List Building ? Strategies I'm Using ? Chad Nicely

I?m sure you are all aware that I am focused on three main strategies in my business. ?Everything else, like I demonstrated in all my training videos is used as an engine to get traffic to those strategies. ? ?So I know you?re saying, buy wait Chad? you?re the big video guy. ?Are you saying that video is not one of your strategies? ?What I am saying is that video is an engine I use to drive traffic to one of my three strategies, as well as?Authority?Blogging, ?Social Media, and the list goes on and on right?

Ok so the one strategy we?re going to focus on in this post is List Building and Email Marketing. ?List?building?does not have to be?difficult? ?I?m going to see if I can?t get you started in this post.

Now for those of you that don?t understand, you simply build your list by obtaining somebody?s email, with permission of course. ?Once you have that email in your Aweber?list or?similar?type of autorsponder you are then able to market that individual with different types of products, or services. ?It really is that easy! ?Don?t make it anymore complicated.

?A common MYTH about?List-building?is that you need to have something of value to get the individuals email address. ?A good example might be a free report, or membership course.

This couldn?t be further from the truth. ?In-fact all you need is CURIOSITY! ?

Check out this optin form below, and tell me you would not click that! ?Be honest!

    ?

Make Sure You Optin To That Form Here, and Get On My List! ?: http://succeedwithchad.com?

I always have some kind of bus or special offer happening!

Ok so do you get it? ?I don?t have to give away anything. ?All I need to do is peak their curiosity! ?That?s it. ?Once you have done that, your optin rates will go through the roof. ?I like to refer to it as the ?SHOCK n? AWE? Factor. ?Alright so now that you know what kind of page you need to create lets talk about ways you can build up your lists.

    List Building Strategies

Sell Something (Buyers) ? This is massive! ?This is the best kind of subscriber you can have! ?Why? ?Simply?because?somebody has taken out their wallet and actually laid down cash. ?They took action! ?I?m sure by now you?re familiar with the Warrior Forum. ?What do you see?happening?all the time? ?You see product creators and Warriors bringing their front end product out at a very low cost. They offer the affiliate 100% commission on that front end offer, and they price it so low, that is an?irresistible?offer. ?The reason is simple, they are building up a list off that front end product so that they can market to you in the future. ?You treat your buyers like GOLD!

Authority Blogs ?- This is a very big tactic as well. ?Now I?m currently not utilizing this very much, because of the rework I?have?going on in my site. ?However I usually have?Popup Domination?or a similar tool opening a light box as soon as you enter the site. ?I will usually give away some course, or ebook that I have created in return for?their?email. ?I also just apply the?Shock?n? Awe factor as well. ?It goes without saying, but I think you can tell that these leads are not as powerful as your buyers, and will not convert as well as a result.

Free WSO?s ? This is a strategy very few marketers are doing. ?When I did this a year ago, I was able to make over 3,000 leads with a $40 investment. ?If I could find the time I would still be doing this. ?The strategy is very simple. ?You create a 20-page pdf report or?something?similar?that contains something of value. ?It could be about email marketing, list building, making money online, internet marketing, whatever you want to write about. ?Some new tip strategy or resource you are using or have discovered. ?You can then pay the Warrior Forum $40 to list this FREE offer as a ?Warrior Special Offer? (WSO). ?Instead of having a buy button in your sales page you simply have a link that the warriors will optin to receive their free gift. ?That?s it! ?SIMPLE!

JV Giveaways ? This is also a very effective strategy for finding leads. ?However, I?ll be honest with you, the quality of these subscribers are not that great. ?Reason being most people use a junk email address before they join any of these giveaways. ?It doesn?t mean that you will not get good leads. ?It?s up to you to handle that list properly and convert them into a good subscriber. ?It can be done. ?Now if you really want to go all out, instead of just participating in the JV Giveaway as a contributor, you should do like I do and try and run your own giveaway. ?When you do this you not only get all the contributes emails addressed in your list, but you also get every single member as they have to register with the giveaway. ?When I ran the ?IM Dream Event? a few months ago I received over 6,000 subscribers. ? I used a script called the Ultimate JV Giveaway Script. ?Take my advice pay the owner the $50 to install the script for you :)

    ?

    Boost Your List Building Efforts!

Now guys this is so simple. ?Once you start building your list you want to get to a few hundred subscribers. ?That should not take any time at all! ?Seriously, I just gave you these methods on a platter. ?It?s up to you to take action. ?Build up your list to those few hundred subscribers, then you are going to find people that lists the same size in the same niche! ?So if I have list of 500 people in the Make Money Online niche then I am going to find another person that has 500 people online in the same or?similar?niche!

Once I find that person I am simply going to set up what they call an ad swap. ?Which means if you have a list of 500 and I have a list of 500 I will send an email to my list using your optin-form and you will send an email to your list using my optin form. ?Now what will happen is you will start getting?unsubscribes. ?That?s ok. ?What you want to have happen is for every (1)?unsubscribe, you want to be getting (2) subscribers. ?Double your efforts. ?Do you get it?

The service I use for that is called Safe Swaps, they have a free program as well as paid program. ?Very simple to use. ?Start swapping your lists today! ?Oh and whatever you do guys? Don?t swap BUYERS! ?Treat them like GOLD!

    ?

Have your list built for you! ?Students making $8,000 a Month! ?Guaranteed?Solo Ad Buys, 4 License Rights, So Much More!

    ?

Finally I have saved the best for last. ?You can do all the?strategies?and methods I outlined today. ?They work! ?You will reach your goals. ?However, there is a faster, and more powerful way to get there. ?That is simply by paying somebody else to build your list for you! ?I?m not kidding I am in this program as we speak, it is?unbelievable? ?So if you join, you will be one of my partners in this community. ?If you join real soon it means will be meeting each other in Vegas here in a few months!

This service that I pay for every month is UNREAL! ?Seriously, by month #4 you will be in the profit zone, with a massive list, and not only that but you will have a?guaranteed?buy for clicks on your list. ?Let me say that again, you will have somebody that will buy your clicks from you. ?Throw in a whole ton of bonuses and other ways to make money and you guys are seeing one of the greatest opportunities ever to hit the Internet Marketing sector. ?Seriously!

So I know you?re pumped up and want to learn more. ?The first thing you need to do is watch this webinar below. ?Now it is like a 3-hour webinar, they teach you everything you need to know about email marketing and making money with solo ads. ?It?s off the hook guys. ?There is a charge up front for the webinar, but don?t worry if you do not fee like the webinar was for you then you don?t have to pay. ?I can promise you, this will impress you. ?This is the?only?individual and mentor I have in this business. ?To give you an idea I am heading out to San Diego to attend a $10,000 Master Mind with the same individual. ?If you are looking to make it online, I am escalating you success with this resource.

Trust me, I wouldn?t be spending all this money if this was not ROCK SOLID INFORMATION! ?It?s AWESOME!

Living in the Land of Make Believe: Romantic Relationship Readiness

*I?believe that we, as humans, are meant to be in relation. Were supposed to have relationships, romantic and platonic and they are supposed to be healthy. But the truth is, no one ever teaches us how to do that. There are no relationship courses in school that show?us how to figure out our value system and then to link up with people who have similar or complimentary values.

We are; however, taught to be in relation with people who are nice to us, who are attractive, who have material wealth and more niceties.?These things are taught through our societal fabric. They are the unwritten expecations.?The problem with this process is that does not take into account what happens after these things become routine. Its great if someone is nice to you, but what if they dont value education the way you do? Its awesome if someone shows you high levels of respect, but what if they dont value independence the way you do? Its sweet if they buy you gifts just because, but what if they dont value communication the way you do?

Well if they dont value what you value or have complimentary ones, then it gets really?tough. In my opinion, everyone should value communication. Why, you ask? Because it is only through communication that?we can understand the status of our relationships. When values start to be misaligned, then resentment has an opportunity to creep in. In addition, this is usually what starts the outside conversations about our relationship. We start talking to other people about things only our significant other can answer.

Our high percentage of failing relationships is not just a matter of these new generations (of which I ama member of)?giving up too easily, as some would like to suggest. As a matter a fact, I would bet a large sum of money that the previous generations could have used a much different approach to relationships than the one they had. The suck it up and hang in there philosophy left a shlew of unfulfilled people; mostly women, I might add.

In addition to checking in on our relationship status, communication is a phenomenal way to continue the process of understanding ourselves, our ticks and motivations. For instance, if my husband/boyfriend (there isnt one at the moment, but if there were)?were to say to me, I would like to quit my job and start a new company and I begin to give him all the reasons why we cant do this right now and why its irresponsible for? him to think of doing such a thing, well there begins the breakdown. We would make out much better if I took time to understand they value that he is trying to satisfy for himself. I know I have to give one for the men also, to balance this out (smile). If a woman tells her husband/boyfriend that she wants to go on a missions trip to India for a month and he begins ranting about the time itll take away from the family, the stress it will put on him to keep it all together while shes gone and how irresponsible it would be of her to do such a thing, then he too runs the risk of alienating her. A better solution (in my humble opinion)? would be to ask as many questions as necessary to understand what value shes attempting to satisfy.

I believe romantic relationship readiness is about self discovery first, finding a friend who value system is in line with your own and thirdly opening the doors of communication from the start of the relationship. Here are a few other tips I believe would change the romantic relationship process as we know it.

    1. Learn about yourself. And I mean really learn. Why do you get upset when certain things happen? Why are you insecure about other things? Why do you get offended when you do? How come a certain type of person annoys you? Why do you cling to your romantic interests to tightly? Who has had the greatest influence on you and why? And so on and so on and so on.

    2. Tie your learnings about yourself to specific values so that you can confidently name the reasons for your emotions. This process is outlined in my book The Things I Used to do to Sneeze!: How to live an authentic life with awesome sensations. (Sorry for the self promo, but the book is actually appropriate for this subject)

    3. Look for a friend you respect,?whose value system is aligned first and romantic interest second. Trust me, when the dust settles, its the related values that make a person loveable even when you dont necessarily like them, at times.

    4. Give your intended friend permission to communicate with you open and respectfully about where they are and how things are affecting him or her. There is nothing like someone saying that you can tell them the truth and then they totally freak on you when you do. Great way to distance yourself.

    5. Commit to respecting the communication process and always listen and speak from a place of understanding. Understanding is critical in all that we do in life. If you began a new job without anyone communicating the expectations, deliverables and required process, you would fail miserably. Relationships are no different.

I believe we can turn this thing around. We need not look to President Obama and First Lady Michelle or any other notable couples and wish. First, we have no idea what they have. I do believe that we can actually find fulfillment in our romantic relationships and that doesnt mean they will all last forever. It means that we will not leave behind or collect so much baggage along our journey. This will leave our emotional palette clear to enjoy all that life has to offer.

CAIRO (AP) ? Prominent Egyptian democracy advocate Mohammed ElBaradei warned Saturday of increasing turmoil that could potentially lead to the military stepping in unless the Islamist president rescinds his new, near absolute powers, as the country's long fragmented opposition sought to unite and rally new protests.

Egypt's liberal and secular forces ? long divided, weakened and uncertain amid the rise of Islamist parties to power ? are seeking to rally themselves in response to the decrees issued this week by President Mohammed Morsi. The president granted himself sweeping powers to "protect the revolution" and made himself immune to judicial oversight.

The judiciary, which was the main target of Morsi's edicts, pushed back Saturday. The country's highest body of judges, the Supreme Judical Council, called his decrees an "unprecedented assault." Courts in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria announced a work suspension until the decrees are lifted.

Outside the high court building in Cairo, several hundred demonstrators rallied against Morsi, chanting, "Leave! Leave!" echoing the slogan used against former leader Hosni Mubarak in last year's uprising that ousted him. Police fired tear gas to disperse a crowd of young men who were shooting flares outside the court.

The edicts issued Wednesday have galvanized anger brewing against Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, from which he hails, ever since he took office in June as Egypt's first freely elected president. Critics accuse the Brotherhood ? which has dominated elections the past year ? and other Islamists of monopolizing power and doing little to bring real reform or address Egypt's mounting economic and security woes.

Oppositon groups have called for new nationwide rallies Tuesday ? and the Muslim Brotherhood has called for rallies supporting Morsi the same day, setting the stage for new violence.

Morsi supporters counter that the edicts were necessary to prevent the courts, which already dissolved the elected lower house of parliament, from further holding up moves to stability by disbanding the assembly writing the new constitution, as judges were considering doing. Like parliament was, the assembly is dominated by Islamists. Morsi accuses Mubarak loyalists in the judiciary of seeking to thwart the revolution's goals and barred the judiciary from disbanding the constitutional assembly or parliament's upper house.

In an interview with a handful of journalists, including The Associated Press, Nobel Peace laureate ElBaradei raised alarm over the impact of Morsi's rulings, saying he had become "a new pharaoh."

"There is a good deal of anger, chaos, confusion. Violence is spreading to many places and state authority is starting to erode slowly," he said. "We hope that we can manage to do a smooth transition without plunging the country into a cycle of violence. But I don't see this happening without Mr. Morsi rescinding all of this."

Speaking of Egypt's powerful military, ElBaradei said, "I am sure they are as worried as everyone else. You cannot exclude that the army will intervene to restore law and order" if the situation gets out of hand.

But anti-Morsi factions are chronically divided, with revolutionary youth activists, new liberal political parties that have struggled to build a public base and figures from the Mubarak era, all of whom distrust each other. The judiciary is also an uncomfortable cause for some to back, since it includes many Mubarak appointees who even Morsi opponents criticize as too tied to the old regime.

Opponents say the edicts gave Morsi near dictatorial powers, neutering the judiciary when he already holds both executive and legislative powers. One of his most controversial edicts gave him the right to take any steps to stop "threats to the revolution," vague wording that activists say harkens back to Mubarak-era emergency laws.

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in nationwide protests on Friday, sparking clashes between anti-and pro-Morsi crowds in several cities that left more than 200 people wounded.

On Saturday, new clashed broke out in the southern city of Assiut. Morsi opponents and members of the Muslim Brotherhood swung sticks and threw stones at each other outside the offices of the Brotherhood's political party, leaving at least seven injured.

ElBaradei and a six other prominent liberal leaders have announced the formation of a National Salvation Front aimed at rallying all non-Islamist groups together to force Morsi to rescind his edicts.

The National Salvation Front leadership includes several who ran against Morsi in this year's presidential race ? Hamdeen Sabahi, who finished a close third, former foreign minister Amr Moussa and moderate Islamist Abdel-Moneim Aboul-Fotouh. ElBaradei says the group is also pushing for the creation of a new constitutional assembly and a unity government.

ElBaradei said it would be a long process to persuade Morsi that he "cannot get away with murder."

"There is no middle ground, no dialogue before he rescinds this declaration. There is no room for dialogue until then."

The grouping seems to represent a newly assertive political foray by ElBaradei, the former chief of the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency. ElBaradei returned to Egypt in the year before Mubarak's fall, speaking out against his rule, and was influential with many of the youth groups that launched the anti-Mubarak revolution.

But since Mubarak's fall, he has been criticized by some as too Westernized, elite and Hamlet-ish, reluctant to fully assert himself as an opposition leader.

The Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice political party, once headed by Morsi, said Saturday in a statement that the president's decision protects the revolution against former regime figures who have tried to erode elected institutions and were threatening to dissolve the constitutional assembly.

The Brotherhood warned in another statement that there were forces trying to overthrow the elected president in order to return to power. It said Morsi has a mandate to lead, having defeated one of Mubarak's former prime ministers this summer in a closely contested election.

Morsi's edicts also removed Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud, the prosecutor general first appointed by Mubarak, who many Egyptians accused of not prosecuting former regime figures strongly enough.

Speaking to a gathering of judges cheering support for him at the high court building in Cairo, Mahmoud warned of a "vicious campaign" against state institutions. He also said judicial authorities are looking into the legality of the decision to remove him ? setting up a Catch-22 of legitimacy, since under Morsi's decree, the courts cannot overturn any of his decisions.

"I thank you for your support of judicial independence," he told the judges.

"Morsi will have to reverse his decision to avoid the anger of the people," said Ahmed Badrawy, a labor ministry employee protesting at the courthouse. "We do not want to have an Iranian system here," he added, referring to fears that hardcore Islamists may try to turn Egypt into a theocracy.

Several hundred protesters remained in Cairo's Tahrir Square Saturday, where a number of tents have been erected in a sit-in following nearly a week of clashes with riot police.

Interview with Dr. Victor Henning, Mendeley

This time (no, I haven?t gone interview-only. One more after this one and we?re back to regular posting)?I?m interviewing Dr. Victor Henning. Dr Henning has a PhD in Psychology from?the Bauhaus-University of Weimar, Germany, and is co-founder and CEO of Mendeley, a program which allows managing and sharing of research articles. Founded in late 2007, Mendeley has now reached 2 million users (and published an interesting?global research report , with graphs showing activity by discipline, average number of articles collected per researchers, etc.)

    Dr. Victor Henning

You co-founded (with? Jan Reichelt and Paul F?ckler) Mendeley in 2007. What was your vision for Mendeley then, and has it changed since?

When we started Mendeley, we primarily wanted to solve our own problems: We were Ph.D. students and each had hundreds of research papers in PDF format that we needed to manage. We wondered why there wasn?t an easier way to manage those PDFs and keep them linked to bibliographic references, to enable you to create citations in the papers you?re writing. That was the first key idea behind Mendeley: Let?s develop a desktop app that can automatically turn my loose collection of PDFs into a structured research paper database that I can read, annotate, cite, and share with others.

The second key idea was: If we can get hundreds of thousands of researchers to use this desktop app to automatically extract information from research papers, why not crowdsource all of this data into an anonymized, open database? We realized that if the data was streaming in from researchers all over the globe in real time, we?d be able to analyze research trends across academic disciplines, connect researchers with similar interests, show readerships statistics for individual research papers, and generate collaborative filtering recommendations similar to Amazon?s, i.e. ?people who have read research paper A have also read research paper B?.

That has been our vision from the start, and it hasn?t changed significantly since then. The biggest change was probably that we were initially quite focused on creating visualizations of research connections ? e.g., you could visualize the citation network contained in your research paper collection as a 3D map within the Mendeley Desktop app. Later on, we dropped this because it was a magnificent task in itself, and we realized that we could let our community build visualization tools themselves if they wanted to. So our vision shifted to enabling third-party developers to tap into our crowdsourced data ? for free, under a Creative Commons ?CC-by? license ? to build their own apps. Since the release of our Open API (http://dev.mendeley.com), more than 260 third-party research apps have been built ?visualization tools, collaboration apps, semantic annotation tools, raw genome data mashups, expert finder services, Kindle and Android Apps, search interfaces, you name it. Our vision is now focused on turning Mendeley into a platform to let this ecosystem flourish.

The new Mendeley report shows that the biggest group of Mendeley users (31%) comes from the biology and medicine disciplines. Is it because you targeted those disciplines, because of their dominance in the global market of science in general, or are there other reasons?

We discussed whether to target specific disciplines in the beginning, but decided against it because we felt that Mendeley Desktop would be useful for anyone trying to manage academic knowledge ? in the sciences as well as the humanities. I believe that the demographics of the Mendeley user base are possibly quite representative of the overall demographics of research: There are simply a lot more biologists and doctors than there are linguists and philosophers.

We did, however, target specific geographic regions first. Because all three of us Mendeley founders are German, our personal academic network was predominantly German, too. We wanted to avoid giving the impression to US and UK academics that Mendeley was German network, so we treaded carefully with inviting our friends first. Instead, when we launched, I did a speaking tour along the US East Coast and presented Mendeley at places like Princeton, NYU, Yale, Brown, MIT, Harvard, and Dartmouth ? and it really took off from there.

Mendeley now has an institutional edition. What are its main functions, and what is its value for academic institutes?

In a bit more detail: Institutions that subscribe to the Mendeley Institutional Edition (MIE) can upgrade all of their students and faculty to a Mendeley premium account, meaning they receive more cloud storage/sync space, personalized research recommendations, enhanced group functionality, and premium support. The data dashboard tracks which journals are being read the most by the institution?s faculty and students, allowing their library to optimize their subscriptions ? meaning, they can cancel journals that are not getting used, and subscribe to journals which are popular, but not yet provided by the library. This enables librarians squeeze more value out of ever-scarcer resources and provide a better service to their researchers.

Moreover, the MIE data dashboard tracks the faculty?s publications: In which journals are they publishing, and how much impact ? measured in global readership ? do these publications have? This helps institutions gather information for research excellence assessments and other reports, as well as highlighting to them who their current and future star researchers are.

Lastly, MIE contains a ?social? tab which shows the librarian the public groups? in which their faculty are most active. Subject librarians can then potentially join in the discussion, re-establish connections with their constituency, and help them discover relevant research content. They can also set the OpenURL library resolver for all researchers at their institution to ensure that, once they discover interesting citations on Mendeley, receive full-text access to the content their library has paid for.

Your impact index (in the institutional edition) is a new way of measuring articles? influence. Have you heard of any cases where it has been used in institutional decision-making? What do you think the index reflects?

MIE is still young ? we only started rolling it out across campuses this fall semester ? so I?ve only heard anecdotal evidence of it influencing institutional decision-making. All of our customers are excited about the prospect of making better subscription decisions while cutting subscription costs, and one librarian at a North American institution has told me specifically that he plans to use the data as negotiation leverage when discussing journal subscription renewals. It?ll be interesting how this plays out over the next few months, as we?re gradually expanding coverage to more campuses.

As for the meaning of Mendeley?s real-time readership index: I believe it is simply a very good measure of research impact, and a leading indicator of citation metrics. Logically, you should have read a piece of research before you cite it ? though there are studies which suggest that, far too often, research gets cited without having been read[1]. Yet, we?ve never seen it as our job at Mendeley to interpret the data: We want to be a neutral data provider, and leave it up to each field of research to determine which metrics are important to them and how to interpret them.

Interestingly, there have been four bibliometric studies in the past year alone which have found a significant correlation of Mendeley?s readership data with Thomson Reuters? Impact Factor, the Scopus Citation Index, and Google Scholar citations [2],[3],[4], [5]?as well pointing out the remarkable Mendeley?s breadth of coverage.

Have there been any attempts to manipulate Mendeley?s numbers?

Not to our knowledge, and it would be very difficult to do so. Because of the scale of Mendeley ? we now track the data of more than two million users ? and its distributed nature, you would have to create thousands of fake ?puppet? accounts from different computers, and have all of those puppet accounts read papers by specific authors. We do have measures in place to prevent bots from creating accounts, and we?d certainly notice odd usage patterns like the one I just described. So, it?s much harder to manipulate our data than it is to manipulate citations, which ? as I?m sure you know ? is a fairly common problem. Earlier this year, Thomson Reuters kicked a few journals out of their citation index because their editors had gamed their citations metrics.
