Summerproof Your Backyard [Guest Post] ? UK Home Improvement ...

Spruce Up Your Yard for Outdoor Summer Fun
Summertime means your backyard will transform from Winter Wasteland to Outdoor Party Central. But, before you can break out the barbecue grill and volleyball net, you have to repair the damage done to your yard by a long, unforgiving winter. Nobody wants to spend time in a patchy, sparse lawn. Check out these few simple things you can do to improve your yard and get it party-ready. Caring for the grass, cleaning your poolside patio and planting flowers can make all the difference!

Proper Lawn Care

Nobody enjoys a lawn that?s overgrown with dried grass and weeds. Spruce up your yard by taking a few simple steps so the lawn looks lush and beautiful.

  • Remove thatch from your grass by raking up dead leaves, removing trash and pulling weeds with roots from the ground.
  • Fertilize and water your lawn thoroughly. Don?t just give it a brief sprinkling, unless your area has received a lot of rain. Fertilize your grass twice a year in the fall and spring.
  • Fix bare spots along your lawn by tilling the ground and evenly spreading grass seeds. Add fertilizer and water normally for grass shoots to grow optimally.
  • Mow your lawn without whacking off too much of the grass shoots. Never cut off more than 1/3 of the grass height or you?ll stunt grass growth. During the warmer summer months, cut your grass a little longer to keep the soil moist and shaded from the sun.
  • Have a designated area where your pets can relieve themselves during potty breaks. Clean up after dogs immediately to avoid killing off grass shoots and creating bare patches of lawn.

Once your grass looks great, check the rest of your yard for home improvement projects that will accent its beauty. Fix and paint fences surrounding your property. Create rock borders and replace broken lawn decorations with new ones. Set pavers down for decorative walkways across your lawn so guests can take in the beauty of flower gardens and other landscaping wonders.

Poolside Patio Upkeep

Besides taking care of your lawn, you?ll need to keep the poolside patio area looking great when entertaining friends and family. The area also needs to be maintained for safety reasons so guests can?t trip and fall into the pool where they might get hurt.

  • Scrub and clean patio tiles. Remove algae and fungus buildup along poolside edges to prevent guests from slipping. Fix broken tiles by either chipping the mortar away or cutting the tile out using a tile saw. Lay new tile and grout in place.
  • Clean outdoor furniture based on the type of material it?s made of. Clean plastic and metal furniture with warm water and mild dishwashing soap. Clean wicker and teak furniture with water and oil-based soap. Make sure to rinse the furniture down and dry thoroughly.
  • Spot clean outdoor cushions according to the manufacturer?s instructions. If your cushions have been soaked by rain, completely dry them indoors. Check for any signs of mold or mildew along the cushion. Replace moldy cushions with new ones that can withstand outdoor weather or line the cushions with protective furniture covers.
  • Inspect all pool equipment for any frayed electrical lines or leaking pipes. Perform regular yearly maintenance so you and your family can enjoy the pool for the hot summer months.

With the proper care, your pool and patio can look beautiful and be safe for everyone. Always remember to never leave young children or pets unattended near pool areas. Prevent pool accidents by keeping your yard and poolside clean and tidy.

Brighten Up Your Yard with Flowers

You don?t have to have a green thumb to add a bit of color to your drab yard. Purchase your favorite flowers that require little care so you can spend less time gardening and more time enjoying your yard.

  • Fill window planters with flowers or place planters on decorative stakes throughout your yard.
  • Weed and fertilize the flowerbeds along your house. Line decorative stones around the flowerbeds as a boundary line so you know where to mow and where not to mow, as well as keep wood chips from spreading into the rest of your yard.
  • If you suffer from allergies, substitute flowers for herbs in the flower boxes and planters. Fresh herbs will be a delight to the entire family when added to your favorite meals.

Give Your Lawn a Little Love

It may seem like a lot of work, but the rewards of having a great yard far outweigh the few hours spent sprucing it up. Even if you just do a few home improvements such as mowing the grass and painting the mailbox, giving your home a little curb appeal will make you want to relax and enjoy your yard more. And once you have a beautiful yard, invite your friends over to have great outdoor parties.

HappyJewishNews.com | Aspirin 'may prevent skin cancer'

An aspirin a day may protect against skin cancer, some experts believe.

People who take aspirin tablets or similar painkillers on a regular basis cut their risk of developing skin cancer ? including the most deadly type ? malignant melanoma ? by about 15%, research suggests.

The work in the journal Cancer involved nearly 200,000 people in Denmark.

But experts say using sunscreen and avoiding too much sun are still the best ways to prevent skin cancer.

Anti-cancer pill?

In the study, approximately 18,000 of the 200,000 participants had been diagnosed with of one of three types of skin cancer ? basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, or the rarer but more dangerous malignant melanoma.

The researchers looked at the medical records of the individuals to calculate how many had been prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen over an eight-year period.

Many were taking them for heart conditions or arthritis.

Those who were more frequently prescribed NSAIDs were less likely to have skin cancer.

The higher the dose and the longer a person had been on the medication, the greater the protective effect.

Individuals with more than two prescriptions for NSAIDs had a 15% decreased risk for developing squamous cell carcinoma and a 13% lower risk of malignant melanoma.

NSAIDs did not appear to lower the overall risk of basal cell carcinoma ? the most common and least aggressive type of skin cancer. But they did cut the risk of basal cell carcinomas developing on certain parts of the body other than the head and neck.

Limitations

The researchers from the University Hospital in Denmark say more research is needed to confirm and further explain their findings.

Studies in animals suggest NSAIDs may block the growth of early pre-cancerous skin lesions, but it is not yet clear if this is also the case in humans.

Scientists already suspect that these drugs may protect against many other cancers, including bowel cancer.

The researchers point out that although they found a link with prescriptions they were not able to monitor precisely how much of the drug a person actually took. Also, people can buy drugs like aspirin from a pharmacy without a prescription.

And they did not look at sun exposure ? the root cause of skin cancer.

Experts say even if NSAIDs do offer some protection against skin cancer, people still need to be sensible in the sun.

Hazel Nunn of Cancer Research UK said: ?By far and away the best way to reduce the risk of skin cancer is to enjoy the sun safely, and take care to avoid sunburn.

?Sunburn?s a clear sign that your skin?s been damaged, and this damage can build up over time and lead to skin cancer in the future. When the sun?s strong, use a combination of shade, clothes and at least SPF 15 sunscreen to protect your skin.

?There is mounting evidence that aspirin does reduce the risk of some cancers, but it?s too soon to say if this includes skin cancer. Aspirin can have serious side effects ? so it?s important to talk to a doctor about the risks and benefits if you?re thinking of taking it regularly.?

BEIJING (AP) ? Social media sites and blogs have lit up after eagle-eyed viewers spotted a surprise cameo in a Chinese TV documentary about the country's police force: Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his now-wife, Priscilla Chan.

The documentary by CCTV was part of a series on Chinese police and high-tech crime-solving methods. A few seconds of footage showing Zuckerberg and Chan walking behind two police officers were shown included in a brief clip posted online by the Hebei province satellite station.

The footage shows the couple wearing the same clothes they were photographed in during a March 27 visit to Shanghai. Zuckerberg wears his custom hooded sweat shirt, this time in brown, and blue jeans, while Chan wears a printed short dress.

The clip shows Zuckerberg looking at the back of the police officers and smiling broadly as the couple walks off-screen. As they are shown, the narrator says: "There is a serious shortage in China's police manpower."

It was not immediately known whether CCTV producers had knowingly inserted Zuckerberg into the documentary. Facebook is blocked in China, along with Twitter, YouTube and other foreign social media, a reflection of the leadership's fear that its power could be threatened by allowing citizens to organize outside of Communist Party control and enjoy unfettered access to information.

Zuckerberg has visited China to vacation and to meet with high-tech entrepreneurs, including a 2010 lunch with Robin Li, CEO of leading Chinese search engine Baidu. He married the 27-year-old Chan on May 20 in a private ceremony at their home, during the same week that he turned 28 and stock for the social network site began trading publicly.

A spokesman for Facebook, based in California, declined to comment Monday on the video clip.

Neato XV-21 Pet & Allergy Automatic Vacuum Cleaner

I have allergies. I also have pets. And right now, it's shedding season. All of that shedding leads to a lot more sneezing than usual, which leads to a lot more vacuuming. But even an obsessive neat freak like me doesn't vacuum often enough to avoid the occasional tumbleweed of pet hair that mysteriously blows through the room when I turn on the ceiling fan.

That's where the $429.99 (direct) Neato XV-21 Pet & Allergy Automatic Vacuum Cleaner comes in. The XV-21 is an update to the XV-11, with upgraded filters and the use of a bristled brush designed to better collect pet hair. And it works. The XV-21 picked up a surprising amount of hair and dust I didn't even notice was on the floor. And it can be programmed to automatically clean as often as you like, even when you're not around. But its allergy-fighting powers are questionable, and it doesn't work well on tight corners. The XV-21 will keep your home free of pet hair tumbleweeds, but you'll still need to keep a traditional vacuum on hand if you like things squeaky clean.

Design and Setup
The XV-21 looks a heck of a lot like the XV-11 we saw in 2009. Unfortunately, both bots share a similar design aesthetic with the Super Nintendo video game system released back in 1990. The device is the same exact shade of Nintendo gray, with purple, orange, and black accents. And despite that fact that the back end is curved, it has a very blocky look. I realize it's a vacuum, but for something you'll watch zipping around your home, a slightly more attractive design would've been appreciated. Or at least a different shade of gray.

The XV-21 measures 13 by 12.5 by 4 inches (HWD) and weighs 8.2 pounds, which is right on par with other cleaning robots, like the Scooba 390?($499.99, 3 stars). There are five buttons used to control the vacuum: a start switch, two menu navigation buttons, a select button, and a back button. There's an easy-to-read 2.5-inch black and white display on top that allows you to control various options for the XV-21. You can set it to spot clean one particular area, for instance, or schedule it to turn on automatically and clean as often as you'd like.

Before using the XV-21, you first must plug in the charging station, which shares a similar look and feel to the vacuum itself. The station uses inductive charging, so the front of the XV-21 just needs to be pressed up against the charging block for it to work. It takes just under three hours to get a full charge. The device finished vacuuming my 550-square foot apartment in about 45 minutes, and had nearly half its battery life left. If the battery dies before the job is finished, the XV-21 will make its way back to the charger, charge back up, then go back out and finish the job.

Performance and Conclusions
Once you're fully charged, simply press the Start button and watch the XV-21 get to work. You'll be sure to know it's working, because the XV-21 is loud. The sound it makes upon starting is not dissimilar to that of a plane taking off, albeit at a slightly lower volume. It isn't as loud as a traditional vacuum, but the XV-21 takes a lot longer to clean the same amount of space as a traditional vacuum, and you tend to notice the noise a lot more when you're not the one doing the work.

The robot uses a laser-based room positioning technology to create a 360-degree view of the room, which allows it analyze furniture, doorways, and other obstacles within 13 feet in order to create the most efficient cleaning path. This worked surprisingly well in practice, as the XV-21 managed to systematically hit every part of my living room (even under the couch), with nary an accidental bump.

From the living room, it navigated out into the bedroom, then back through the living room and into the bathroom, but for some reason it never made its way into my kitchen. I had to place it there myself, and while the XV-21 did a fine job, I can't figure out why it wouldn't go in.

The big purple lid on top of the vacuum is the dirt bin. It fits in securely, but was easy to pop up when the XV-21 was finished. Now, I'm a pretty tidy guy, and I keep what I consider to be a pretty clean apartment. So I was shocked when I opened the XV-21's dirt bin to find it filled with dust and pet hair. I dust and vacuum regularly, so I wasn't expecting the XV-21 to pick up much more than the occasional crumb or stray dog hair. I was at once disconcerted to see all that I had missed, but pleased that the XV-21 managed to pick it up.

Additionally, the XV-21 handled the different surfaces in my apartment?hardwood floors, throw rugs, and tiles?with aplomb. I was especially impressed with the job it did on the large throw rug in my living room, which looked noticeably perkier after a visit from the XV-21.

Mysterious kitchen snub aside, the only major issue I had with the XV-21 is that it can't quite suck all of the pet hair out of a tight corner, which, of course, is where pet hair tends to accumulate. To be fair, even the main attachment on my Dyson vacuum has a hard time getting all the way into a corner?that's where the vacuum tube comes in. But that means you'll still need to keep a traditional vacuum cleaner on hand to pick up where the XV-21 can't.

Additionally, I'm dubious to the claims that this is an "Allergy" vacuum. Sure, cleaning up dirt, dust, and pet hair is sure to help remove plenty of allergens, but it's not like the XV-21 is releasing an antihistamine mist into the air as it cleans. This is no more an allergy-combatant than the handheld mini vacuum I had in my old college dorm room was. But the XV-21 will definitely do a better job of cleaning your floors.

Clean up is simple, too. Just remove the dirt bin, open its door, and empty the contents into the garbage. Pop it back into the XV-21, and you're ready to vacuum again.

If you already own an XV-11, there's no need to buy the XV-21. You can upgrade your model with the new bristle brush and updated filter for $60, then upgrade your device to the latest firmware. While the Neato XV-21 Pet & Allergy Automatic Vacuum Cleaner doesn't spray and scrub your floor like the Scooba 390, it works on a wider variety of surfaces, is programmable, and lasts longer. The iRobot?Roomba 770?($499.99, 4 stars), meanwhile, has a sleeker design and uses dirt sensors that allows it to pay closer attention to a particularly dirty spot on your floor. But if what you want is an extra hand to remove all that pesky pet hair, the XV-21 is a good, albeit pricey, tool. Just don't get rid of rid of your old push vacuum just yet.

Twitter to bring ?Death to America?! Twitter as a Terrorist tool?

Gizmodo and the Danger Room, reported today that government agencies are worried of the potential of terrorist organizations to use sites like twitter to coordinate terror strikes.

Twitter would of course make an easy anonymous platform for members of Hezbollah or Al Quaida to coordinate some sort of suicide bombing.

Each person would just need a phone, laptop, or other mobile device with access to a mobile or wifi network.

Army intelligence has come up with a few scenarios that a terrorist organization could utilize social network sites like twitter, as well as other cellphone features and programs.

Some of the topics brought up in the report include: Using mobile phone camera's to monitor 'the enemy'; Using the gps of some mobile phones for markmanship, border crossings, etc...; The installation of voice modification software to disguise the voice of would be terrorists.

The presentation also looking into a discussion on how militants may pair mobile applications with Twitter to expand their resources.

Similar to the way Twitter was used as a countersurveillance tool by activists during the Republican National Convention, the activists tweeted about the movement of Local Law Enforcement in real-time.

The presentation lays out three major scenarios.

Scenario 1: Terrorists send messages back and forth, regarding how, where, and number of troops that are moving around, in order to conduct an ambush.

Scenario 2: Terrorists uses mobile phone to signal remote explosive devices, or to coordinate remote detonation by a third party based on near real-time movement and imagery.

Scenario 3: Cyber terrorists find a U.S. soldiers Twitter account, he gains information from the soldier, and uses the information for identity theft, hacking, and possible physical attacks. This scenario could play out any and all major social networks...

Joy R. Absalon - US Presswire

It is time to continue our?MLB?Power Rankings for the 2012 season, which will continue to focus on the top 10 teams in the majors.

Texas Rangers?(This Week: 1, Last Week: 1) -?The Rangers had struggled to score runs over the past week, but they more than made up for it against the Toronto Blue Jays. Josh Hamilton hit another homer, and the Rangers cruised to a 14-3 victory. Games like these are why the Rangers remain #1 on our MLB Power Rankings.

Los Angeles Dodgers?(This Week: 2, Last Week: 3) -?Matt Kemp and Clayton Kershaw get most of the attention, but how about the season by AJ Ellis? He?s got a 944 OPS with an insane 444 OBP, and he?s transformed himself into one of the best catchers in the game. He won?t keep hitting like this, but Ellis is one of the driving forces behind the Dodgers surprising best record in the majors.

Baltimore Orioles?(This week: 3, Last Week: 4) -?Adam Jones gets his extension and drives in a pair of runs. With Jason Hammel close to free agency he has to be next on the Orioles list. At 29-17, the Orioles are one of the best team in the majors, and remain in the top 3 for our MLB Power Rankings.

Tampa Bay Rays?(This Week: 4, Last Week: 7) -?It?s amazing that they?re a game out of first without Evan Longoria. Alex Cobb has done a fantastic job filling in for the injured Jeff Niemann, winning both of the games he has pitched so far.

Washington Nationals?(This Week: 5, Last Week: 6) -?Their offence is one of the worst in the majors, but at least Bryce Harper is starting to hit again. They took game one of a big series against the Atlanta Braves, who are in a freefall right now.

Atlanta Braves?(This Week: 6, Last Week: 2) -?They got swept by the Reds in a four game series, and now they have to beat Stephen Strasburg in order to stay close to the Nats. Chipper Jones went back on the disabled list, and nothing is going right for the Braves anymore. Given how tight the NL East is, another loss could put them in fourth. A bad week might push them out of the top 10 of our MLB Power Rankings.

Cincinnati Reds?(This week: 7, Last Week: N/A) -?A sweep of the Braves and a surprising lead of the NL Central puts them back on our MLB Power Rankings. They?re winning with good pitching and the continued MVP calibre production of Joey Votto. He?s been one of the best players in the National League, and if the Reds make the playoffs don?t be surprised if Votto takes home his second MVP award.

St. Louis Cardinals?(This Week: 8, Last Week: 5)?-?What a difference a week makes. Last week the Cardinals were unstoppable, and now they trail the Reds by half a game. They got swept by the Dodgers and lost 2/3 to the Philadelphia Phillies. They?ve lost Lance Berkman for another 8-10 weeks, and then they lost his replacement Matt Carpenter. Next week doesn?t get any easier, as they face Atlanta for a 3 game set.

New York Yankees?(This Week: 9, Last Week: 9) -?With the victory last night they?re back in third place in the AL East. Which doesn?t sound very impressive, but right now that?s good enough to be the second wild card team. How about the season by Curtis Granderson? 14 homers, 25 RBI, and a 912 OPS. Everybody talks about the successful seasons of Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, but somehow Granderson always flies under the radar. It?s a shame too, because he?s one of the best players on a loaded Yankees squad.

Cleveland Indians?(This week: 10, Last Week: 10) -?Is it too early to say Shin-Soo Choo is back? With a 900 OPS in May, one of the best all around outfielders in the game is starting to heat up after a forgettable 2011 season. And Cleveland couldn?t be any happier with the timing, as their lead is down to 2.5 games over the Chicago White Sox.

Washington fish farm kills stock after virus found

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, Wash. (AP) -- A deadly fish virus has been detected in Washington state waters for the first time, forcing a fish farm to kill its entire stock of Atlantic salmon.

Tests this month confirmed the presence of an influenza-like virus called infectious hematopoietic necrosis at a salmon farm off Bainbridge Island across from Seattle on Puget Sound, the Kitsap Sun reported ( http://is.gd/iyu6qf ).

The virus, or IHN virus, does not affect humans. It occurs naturally in wild sockeye salmon and can be carried by other fish, such as herring, which sometimes pass through fish net pens.

John Kerwin, fish health supervisor for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, said the virus is a big concern.

"Any first time it occurs, you don't fully understand the impact to wild fish," Kerwin told the newspaper. "We know it can impact (farm) fish. If we move fast, we can try to minimize the amplification."

Seattle-based American Gold Seafoods plans to remove more than a million pounds of Atlantic salmon from infected net pens in Rich Passage off the southern tip of Bainbridge Island. In April, the company noticed that fish were dying off at a fast rate. Test results this month confirmed the virus.

American Gold Seafoods, affiliated with Icicle Seafoods of Seattle, operates two hatcheries near Rochester, Wash., and has 120 pens off Bainbridge Island, Port Angeles, Cypress Island and Hope Island in Puget Sound.

"It's a very, very big loss for us," Alan Cook, Icicle's vice president of aquaculture told the Kitsap Sun. "We'll clean up and start again."

The company plans to remove all dead or dying fish by the end of June. Nets from two acres worth of pens will be removed and disinfected. The fish farm could be running again in four months.

Cook said the company has increased monitoring of net pens in Clam Bay near Manchester in Puget Sound, which is about a half-mile from the infected pens.

The IHN virus recently appeared in two British Columbia fish farms, forcing the destruction of nearly 600,000 fish there, the newspaper reported.

The recent outbreaks have prompted Washington-based Wild Fish Conservancy to call for tougher testing rules and limits on net pen salmon aquaculture.

Even though the virus occurs naturally in Northwest salmon, the group worries that densely-packed fish farms can amplify the virus' spread, foster its mutation and infect wild fish that pass in or near the pens.

Cook said his company is taking the virus seriously, and its plan to remove all the farm's fish is not required by law.

"It's good husbandry to limit the risk to other fish," he told the Kitsap Sun. "We're not letting the situation sit and fester and then explode."

Democratic Rep. Claims Victimizing Women is ?as American as Apple Pie?

Democratic Rep. Gwen Moore Claims Victimizing Women is as American as Apple Pie

Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) called the victimization of women "as American as apple pie."

A Democratic congresswoman claimed this week that victimizing women is practically a right of passage in the United States, and that doing so is even ?as American as apple pie.?

Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.), a victim of abuse herself, was recounting her reasoning for voting against the ?fake? Violence Against Women Act reauthorization during a call in to Current TV?s ?Talking Liberally with Stephanie Miller.?

?Victimization of women is as American as apple pie. I think people accept it and men?s right [of] passage, men?s rights as boyfriends and husbands,? Moore said.

First passed in 1994, the act has been reauthorized twice with little controversy. This time, however, the process has stalled after the Senate passed a version with added protections for gays, lesbians and transgender people; the authority for tribal courts to prosecute non-Indians for domestic violence that occurs on reservations; and an increase in the number of visas for illegal immigrant women who are the victims of abuse.

(Related: ?Real News From The Blaze:? S.E. Cupp Breaks Down Violence Against Women Act)

The House of Representatives passed its own narrower version of the bill without those expanded protections, earning a veto threat from President Barack Obama. The Senate and the House have both essentially refused to consider the other chamber?s version; the House has cited the fees associated with the immigrant visas, while the Senate has sought to paint the House as engaging in the ?war on women? by not expanding the act?s provisions.

Moore called the House?s bill ?very, very frightening? and told the story of her own rape, in which she said a young man came by her house to take her out and ended up raping and nearly choking her to death.

Brotherhood claims lead as Egypt vote count begins

CAIRO (AP) ? The Muslim Brotherhood quickly staked a claim Thursday for its candidate to advance to a runoff vote, saying its exit polls showed him leading in Egypt's landmark presidential election to succeed ousted leader Hosni Mubarak.

As vote-counting began, exit polls by several Arab television stations also suggested the Brotherhood's Mohammed Morsi was ahead of the pack of 13 candidates. The reliability of the various exit surveys was not known, and a few hours after the end of two days of voting, only a tiny percentage of the ballots had been counted.

But the swiftness of the Brotherhood's claim showed its eagerness to plant its flag and establish in the public eye that Morsi had at least won entry into a second round vote. There are five prominent candidates, but none is expected to win outright in the first round. A run-off between the two leading contenders would be held June 16-17.

The first truly competitive presidential election in Egypt's history turned into a heated battle between Islamist candidates and secular figures rooted in Mubarak's old regime. The most polarizing figures in the race were Morsi and former air force commander and former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq, a veteran of Mubarak's rule.

The Brotherhood is hoping for a presidential victory to seal its political domination of Egypt, which would be a dramatic turnaround from the decades it was repressed under Mubarak. It already holds nearly half of parliament after victories in elections late last year.

The group has promised a "renaissance" of Egypt, not only reforming Mubarak-era corruption and reviving decrepit infrastructure, but also bringing a greater degree of rule by Islamic law. That prospect has alarmed more moderate Muslims, secular Egyptians and the Christian minority, who all fear restrictions on civil rights and worry that the Brotherhood shows similar domineering tendencies as Mubarak.

"I think we are on the verge of a new era. We trusted God, we trusted in the people, we trusted in our party," prominent Brotherhood figure Essam el-Erian said at a news conference at which the group claimed its lead.

Morsi's campaign spokesman, Murad Mohammed Ali, cited exit polls conducted by Brotherhood campaign workers nationwide, though he declined to give percentages for Morsi's lead.

Regional television channels, citing their own exit polls, also placed Morsi as the top finisher, with a tussle for second place between Shafiq, moderate Islamist Abdel-Moneim Abolfotoh and leftist Hamdeen Sabahi.

Across the country, election workers cracked open the transparent ballot boxes ? sealed by serial-numbered plastic bands to ensure they had not been tampered with ? and began working their way through the paper ballots. By 1 a.m. Friday, four hours after polls closed, results from about 5 percent of the 13,000 polling stations emerged, putting Morsi on top at 35 percent, followed by Shafiq with 22 percent and Abolfotoh with 16 percent.

Voter turnout appeared far lighter on Thursday than the opening day of balloting Wednesday. But those in line where still revved up on the fervor of choosing after decades of having no voice in deciding their leader.

"I like the personality of Shafiq. He is strong enough to lift the country," said Suheir Abdel-Mumin, one of several women standing in line waiting to vote in the Cairo district of el-Zawiya al-Hamra.

Somaiya Imam, still undecided on whom to choose, replied with a reference to Islamist candidates, saying: "Don't you think we should vote for the candidate who holds the Quran?"

"We voted for them before and they let us down," Abdel-Mumin responded, referring to the Brotherhood's victories in last year's parliamentary elections. "They want everything ? the presidency, parliament and government. They are never satisfied."

A woman standing behind the two joined in: "But he (Shafiq) is a Mubarak associate."

The Brotherhood faced a backlash from many of the voters who supported it in the parliament election but later grew disillusioned. Some accused it of trying to overly monopolize power and breaking earlier promises not to run for president. Others felt it simply had not produced any accomplishments with its parliament dominance ? though the ruling military has severely hampered the parliament.

Still, Morsi enjoyed the might of the Brotherhood's well-organized electoral machine, the nation's strongest.

"We need a president who gets rid of the former corrupt and oppressive system and brings Egypt back to the position it deserves economically and internationally," said Rizk Mohammed, a contractor voting with his family in Cairo ? all for Morsi. He defended the Brotherhood against claims it was trying to monopolize all power, saying pro-Mubarak media were fomenting that idea.

Also, the anti-Islamist vote was divided. Shafiq and former foreign minister Amr Moussa and Shafiq split the votes of many who craved a familiar face that could bring stability. Sabahi, as well as Abolfotoh, siphoned votes of those who could not bear to vote for a "feloul" ? or "remnant" of the old regime ? or a hard-core Islamist.

Moussa, who had been leading in many pre-election polls, appeared to have suffered the most.

During the day Thursday, he blasted Shafiq in an interview on Al-Arabiya television, accusing him of planning to bring back Mubarak's regime and demanding he quit the race.

"The Shafiq campaign is calling for the re-creation of the past and it will take the country back to the time before the revolution," Moussa said, looking rattled with his hair unkempt.

He also made a last-minute appearance to reporters outside his Cairo campaign headquarters with a plea for supporters to vote ? a suggestion his own exit polling showed him faltering.

"I call on all Egyptians, male and female, to go out in these last two hours and vote," he said.

Both Shafiq and the Brotherhood's Morsi have repeatedly spoken of the dangers, real or imaginary, of the other becoming president. Morsi has said there would be massive street protests if a "feloul" wins, arguing it could only be the result of rigging.

Shafiq, on his part, has said it would be "unacceptable" if an Islamist takes the presidential office, echoing the rhetoric of Mubarak, his longtime mentor who devoted much of his 29-year rule to fighting Islamists. Still, Shafiq's campaign has said it would accept the election's result.

Reports of voting violations seemed relatively limited. The Egyptian Association for Supporting Democratic Development reported fistfights between supporters of Morsi, Shafiq, Abolfotoh and Moussa, and some incidents of money being given to voters. It also reported some attempts to influence voters at the polls, including women wearing the all-covering veil campaigning for Morsi inside polling centers.

(AP) ? Dwyane Wade was bleeding after taking a smack in the head from Tyler Hansbrough, who became the target of a retaliatory shot from Udonis Haslem a few moments later.

When that was over, the Miami Heat kept hitting the Indiana Pacers where it mattered most ? the scoreboard.

LeBron James scored 30 points, Wade added 28, and the Heat moved one win away from another trip to the Eastern Conference finals with a 115-83 victory over the hurting Pacers on Tuesday night, when three flagrant fouls added more intrigue to an already-physical series and Indiana watched starting forwards Danny Granger and David West leave with injuries.

"We're in the flow," James said. "We're in a good flow right now. Guys know what it takes out on the floor to help us win and guys are always in position, both offensively and defensively."

The Heat outscored Indiana 74-45 after Granger sprained his left ankle, and 86-58 after Wade took the shot from Hansbrough early in the second quarter. Miami leads the best-of-seven East semifinals 3-2, with Game 6 in Indianapolis on Thursday night.

"We learned early in this series, you don't get two wins for a blowout," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said.

James and Wade outscored Indiana's starters 58-45. James finished with 10 rebounds and eight assists, Shane Battier scored 13 points, Mario Chalmers had 11 rebounds, and Haslem scored 10 points for Miami, which never trailed, held a 22-2 edge in fast-break points and shot a franchise playoff-record 61 percent ? best of any team in the playoffs this season.

Paul George scored 11 points for Indiana, with Granger and West adding 10 points apiece. Granger departed the arena in a walking boot, while West's night ended after the third quarter with what the Pacers called a left knee sprain. West said someone dove into his knee ? "part of the game, I guess," West said ? but on the play in question he was getting boxed out by Battier, with replays showing the Heat forward backed into his hip area.

"They played at their tempo," West said. "We weren't able to get enough stops."

A series marked by some rough moments had perhaps its worst with 19.4 seconds remaining when Miami reserve center Dexter Pittman went across the lane to send a forearm into the chin area of Indiana's Lance Stephenson ? who made a choke sign toward James during the Pacers' Game 3 win.

Pittman was caught on camera winking after the foul. Stephenson had X-rays for a possible collarbone problem, but wrote on Twitter two hours after the game that he was fine.

"I don't know if that was retaliation. ... I'm sure the NBA will and do what they have to do," Granger said.

James said he hadn't seen a replay of Pittman's hit.

"There's no room for dirty plays in our game, period ? no matter if it comes from us or Indiana or anyone in the league at this point," James said. "We're all one group and at the end of the day you don't want to see anyone get injured."

Hansbrough hit Wade early in the second quarter, and Wade wound up with a cut over his right eye, like Haslem did at Indiana in Game 4. Haslem retaliated against Hansbrough not long afterward, earning a flagrant-1 foul that left the Pacers saying it should merit a flagrant-2 and automatic ejection.

"Referee's call," Vogel said.

Said Haslem: "I've seen worse in this league in nine years. Nobody wants to give an inch and everybody's going hard."

Indiana trailed 19-8 early, then had a chance to tie when Granger lined up a 3-pointer with 3:03 left in the half.

It didn't go down. He did.

Granger landed on James' foot. The Heat outscored Indiana 8-2 the rest of the half, with James ? who had been guarded by Granger for much of the series ? scoring seven of them, the last a layup just before the halftime horn sounded with Miami going into the break leading 49-40.

Granger tried to play in the second half, lasting about 3 minutes before realizing his ankle wasn't going to let him continue. X-rays were negative, which was about the only piece of good news for Indiana.

By then, Miami was rolling.

James leaned back to catch a slightly wayward pass from Chalmers near the Miami bench, firing it in one motion to Wade for an easy score as the reigning MVP toppled on Heat assistant coach Ron Rothstein. Mike Miller even made the crowd roar for defending Leandro Barbosa and forcing a missed 3-pointer late in the quarter ? the highlight there being Miller was playing while missing one sneaker.

When Granger left, it was 56-45. By the end of the quarter, Miami's lead was 76-57, and the margin reached 37 in the final moments.

So now the Heat are one win from the East finals, after a series filled with twists and turns.

"This is our challenge right now, to leave it behind us," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "A lot of good things tonight, but we have to focus on the next one."

NOTES: Haslem needed nine stitches after Sunday's game to close a cut over his right eye; the Heat distributed 20,000 stickers in homage of the bandage he wore on Tuesday. ... Indiana has not held the lead at any point in the last 1 hour, 5 minutes, 20 seconds of the series. ... Indiana lost consecutive games for the first time in these playoffs. ... The winner of the rebounding battle has won each game of the series. Miami outrebounded Indiana 49-35 in Game 5.
