Circle Park Behavioral Health Services and its Chrysalis Center hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to announce its new health and fitness room that was funded by a grant from Florence?s Women in Philanthropy and the Junior Welfare League.?

Thelma Alexander, Chrysalis Center Director, said, ?We are excited to be establishing a health and fitness room and provide nutritional counseling for our residents. This will allow us to ensure an enhanced holistic approach to services that we can provide to our women and increase their opportunity for a successful recovery.?The Women in Philanthropy and the Junior Welfare League share our mission to improve the quality of life of children and families in our community and it is a thrill to partner with them on this effort.?

The Chrysalis Center is a unique, 16-bed, extended residential treatment facility that offers chemically dependent mothers the opportunity to receive intensive treatment services while continuing to have their children?younger than 11?live with them. Research indicates that while undergoing treatment, women often replace their drug of choice with a food addiction and often demonstrate unhealthy weight gains, as much as?60 pounds in the first year. Compounding the problem, children often model their eating behaviors after their parents and as their parent?s weight increases, so does theirs.

The Junior Welfare League of Florence and the Women in Philanthropy provide a powerful and highly personal approach to improving the quality of life through their volunteer support and efforts in the Florence community.?Their grant funding insures that innovative and effective strategies are utilized to foster social, economic, educational, cultural improvement in our community. In order to address the serious health issue of mothers experiencing addiction issues, the Chrysalis Center received grant funding from these two civic organizations to establish a fitness and exercise room to be incorporated into the weekly treatment plan for the residents.?

Beverly Hiller of The Eastern Carolina Community Foundation?s Women in Philanthropy shared that most of the group?s grant funding is targeted toward the needs of women and children.?

?This is a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with Circle Park Behavioral Health Services and its Chrysalis Center to provide a unique and innovative addition to their services.?This is one of the nine grants that we awarded this year and it is wonderful to have an opportunity to visually witness and experience the impact it will have on the lives of the women receiving services here.?

The grant?s goals are for the Chrysalis Center?s residents to exhibit a more consistent and disciplined approach to daily exercise, demonstrate improved nutritional habits, and model healthier lifestyle habits that will support their overall recovery efforts.?This will be done by the establishment of an onsite health and fitness room that will include a variety of exercise equipment and machines that will be utilized regularly by the Chrysalis Center?s residents to support the grants goals.?Also, as part of this funding, the Chrysalis Center residents will receive a weekly group counseling session by a registered dietician to assist them in making healthy food choices and meal planning.?

China officially tops one billion mobile subscribers

We heard last year that China was approaching 900 million mobile phone subscribers, and it looks like it's now finally hit the big one. The country's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology confirmed today that, as of the end of February, there were more than a billion mobile subscribers in the country (1.01 billion, to be specific). As the AFP notes, that's individual subscriptions, which includes users with more than one phone, but any way you slice it that's a whole lot of cellphone users. Of those, 144 million are on 3G networks, which is fully double the number from April of 2011. Not surprisingly, much of that growth comes at the expense of landline phones, which have dropped a further 828,000 in the first two months of the year to 284.3 million. Internet use also continues to be on the upswing, with more than half a billion people having internet access of some sort, and 154.96 million having broadband access (up nearly five million during those same two months).

The lyrics get messed up and she chokes.?She stops altogether. Her confidence is completely rattled.

From the sidelines enters one of the basketball coaches.

What an amazing example of the importance of coaches! Of why, no matter how amazing our talent (and this girl has some serious pipes!) we all can use some coaching.

Today, we were talking about this in the context of the people that spend more time on a daily basis with my kids than I do. Their teachers.

We?ve heard from them how having coaches and professional development feedback loops in their workplace is the standard of excellence and best practice. ?My kids? teachers (on top of everything else they do) are still on a quest for self-improvement -and to me, that makes them my heroes.

Such a great idea right? Coaches. For teachers. Because no matter how awesome we are (and my kids? teachers ARE awesome) we all would love to have a coach in our corner like the one in this video.

Come to think of it, I could use one of these as a parent sometimes?

Forget the fact of there being "9 million bicycles in Beijing, that's not a fact. Indeed, motor vehicle traffic is fast becoming a big problem that has led to unsustainable pollution and draconian rules in some parts of the city. Now, Nan Ji of the Hebei United University in China and colleagues have developed an algorithm to help traffic planners optimize the flow of traffic across roundabouts.

Writing in the International Journal of Innovative Computing and Applications, Ji and colleagues at the Tangshan Tanggang Expressway Management Office and Tian Jin Polytechnic University explain how their computer algorithm models traffic flow and figures out the largest traffic capacity through. The approach can compare the effects of using traffic signals in different modes or having such traffic controls disabled altogether. The system can also apply diversionary tactics to allow traffic to be channeled away from a particular roundabout at heavily congested times if possible.

In most cities, chronic traffic jams and gridlock impede the flow of vehicles, wasting drivers' times and costing billions of dollars directly and indirectly as well as generating a sooty and smoggy carbon tracks across many. The roundabout was first posited as a way to smooth traffic flow at the beginning of the twentieth century when there were many orders of magnitude fewer vehicles on the roads. Nevertheless, roundabouts with traffic signals to further control and prioritize traffic are being seen as the better option to conventional "crossroads" type intersections between stretches of road.

The team has considered three critical points in order to find a way to optimize roundabout implementation. They have looked at how to judge what controls might be needed with respect to traffic volume. They have looked at how delays at each entry and exit point on a roundabout might be balanced for the smoothest flow. They have also looked at how controlled flow compares with roundabouts with no traffic signals.

In testing the algorithm on a simulated roundabout in Beijing, and ignoring any number of bicycles, the team has found that they can reduce delays to just 11 seconds at the roundabouts' entry point with judicious timing of traffic signals.

Effective June 1, 2011, the Company transferred these rights to Mr. Sigurd Jorstad, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Company, and the President of United Parking Inc., a company controlled and owned by Mr. Jorstad. The transfer of the asset extinguishes an $80,000 loan payable by the Company to NGNT.

Pursuant to an interim agreement dated June 1, 2011, the Company has further loaned $237,000 to Mr.Jorstad and United Parking Inc. over the course of 2011. The loan will bears interest at seven (7) percent per annum, payable in interest only for 2012 and thereafter monthly blended interest and principal of $7,318 for a period of three years commencing January 31, 2013. WASHINGTON (AP) ? A discarded chunk of a Russian rocket is forcing six space station astronauts to seek shelter in escape capsules early Saturday.

NASA spokesman Rob Navias (NAVE-e-us) says the space junk will barely be close enough to be a threat. But if it hits the station it could be dangerous, so the astronauts ? two Americans, three Russians and a Dutchman ? will wake early and climb into two Soyuz vehicles ready to rocket back to Earth just in case.

The debris is supposed to come closest at 2:38 a.m. EDT. It was not noticed until Friday, too late to move the International Space Station out of the way.

This is the third time in 12 years that astronauts have had to seek shelter from space junk.

Plot to free woman from death row is busted

A man and a guard who allegedly plotted to break out the country's youngest female death row inmate have been charged and arrested, the Tennessean reported.

Officials say that Donald Kohut, Jr., a 34-year-old personal trainer from New Jersey, struck up a relationship with Christa Gail Pike, 36, the only womanon Tennessee's death row, according to the state's department of correction. They wrote letters and Kohut visited Pike, who is incarcerated at the Tennessee Prison for Women, twice since July.

In January, authorities learned that Kohut, wanting more than the occasional, shackled face-to-face visit, sought to free Pike and had enlisted the help of a guard, Justin Heflin, 23.

Pike was sentenced to death for killing a friend from school in 1995, when she was 18. Kohut was arrested this week in New Jersey, NJ.com reported and charged with bribery and conspiracy to commit escape.

Mind you, I don?t always review software just because someone asks. 99.9% of requests often go unanswered. Somehow, Folium sounded intriguing so I agreed.

What Is It?

Folium Book Studio labels itself as an eBook conversion and design tool. It will take your book and make it into an eBook format that Kindles, Nooks, iPads, Tablets etc can open.

How?

You start by creating a free account. Once in your account, you can familiarize yourself with the options using a sample book project that is automatically loaded into your account. You can?t export this book though but you can edit, remove, add, tweak, change the cover, design the cover, change styles and do just about anything to the sample book project so you can gain confidence using the tool.

Once you are ready to create your own eBook, you can start by creating a new project. Projects cost you 1 credit ($79) and you will have to pay up front for a credit before you can create a project.

When you have paid for a project, you begin by giving the project a title and some basic information. Next, you can upload your book. Folium accepts books in these formats:

• Microsoft Word (.DOC or .DOCX)
• HTML
• Rich text format (.RTF)
• Plain text (.TXT)

After the book is uploaded, Folium will attempt to clean up the formatting and detect where all your chapters, page headings and content are. It will present you with a quick snapshot of the headings and content. From there on you can edit the content in a nice, easy to use editor interface. You can also re-arrange your chapters easily by dragging and dropping them. At any time, you can also preview how the book will look like in an eReader.

When you are happy with the book and ready to publish, you simply click the Download button and Folium will generate a copy of your book in the necessary formats for Kindle and B&N. It?ll also automatically generate and assign an ISBN to your book.

You can return to download this book multiple times. Folio will save your book project for 1 year.

What I like most is the built in styles. One of my biggest challenges creating digital books is my lack of creativity when it comes to matching fonts and sizes. It sounds easy but it?s not. I?m not in the printing or publishing business but have worked in an ad agency. I know there are reasons behind certain fonts and sizes. So having pre-built styles that look like a regular book is fantastic. You can even add little glyphs or fleurons to your page for that nice finish.

Free ISBN. This I like. It ISBN is included in your project credit. It?s automatically created and attached to your book when you export. While getting an ISBN is not difficult. You can buy one online and have it immediately but single ISBN?s cost $125 and a bundle of 10 cost $250. The price to create a project and have it properly formatted with ISBN with Folium is $79. I?d say that?s a deal.

Dis-Likes

Because I am only reviewing this product for a short time and haven?t actually created the book and put it up over at Amazon, iBooks or B&N, my experience is limited. At this time I can say the tool itself is a pleasure to work with and the price is right. The ability to push the book to these digital marketplaces would be nice.

Another thing, the ability to download the book without ISBN generation would also be welcome. This way, we can test how the book looks like by directly loading it into our own devices. As it is, I couldn?t verify the design and formatting on the Kindle or iPad. I?m sure it will look great but it would be nice to experience the book in a real device.

Gehry says he would change Eisenhower memorial

WASHINGTON?? Responding to family objections, architect Frank Gehry said he would consider changing a planned Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial in Washington, D.C. Eisenhower family members said the design doesn't put enough emphasis on his achievements as president and World War II military leader.

Family members expressed their concerns at a House subcommittee hearing Tuesday, where a letter from Gehry was also introduced as testimony.

Gehry's design calls for a memorial park framed by large metal tapestries depicting Eisenhower's boyhood home in Kansas. Two large carved stones would depict Ike as president and as military hero, and a statue of a young Eisenhower would appear to marvel at what his life would become. The memorial would be built just off the National Mall, near the National Air and Space Museum.

The family objects to the tapestries and to depicting Eisenhower in his youth, saying it focuses too much on his humble roots, rather than his accomplishments as Republican president from 1953 to 1961 and as supreme Allied commander in Europe during World War II.

Gehry, whose works include the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, said his design does celebrate Eisenhower's accomplishments with heroic images and with his words carved in stone.

"My detractors say that I have missed the point, and that I am trying to diminish the stature of this great man," Gehry wrote. "I assure you that my only intent is to celebrate and honor this world hero and visionary leader."

If the memorial organizers and the family "conclude that the sculpture of young Eisenhower is an inappropriate way to honor him, then I will be open to exploring other options with them," Gehry wrote.

Gehry noted that he has met with Eisenhower's granddaughters, Susan and Anne Eisenhower, and is exploring other design ideas to respond to their concerns. Options include adding a list of accomplishments, more quotations from Eisenhower or additional images in stone to show his achievements, he said.

Members of the Eisenhower Memorial Commission, which selected Gehry for the project, also responded Tuesday to criticism of the architect's design.

Rep. Leonard Boswell of Iowa, a member of the federal commission, testified that he had his own reservations about depicting a young Eisenhower at first but came to realize it would be a draw for the millions of children who visit the nearby Air and Space Museum.

"The youngsters will come out of that museum and just naturally walk across the street and see what happened in a person's life," Boswell said. "Who would have ever thought, Abilene Kan., somebody would end up as supreme Allied commander and president of this great country? So I started really falling in love with this concept."

Boswell said the commission is ready to move on and build the memorial "in the best possible way."

Alfred Geduldig, who was appointed to the memorial commission by President Bill Clinton in 1999, said after the hearing that he doesn't know if anything can be done to regain the family's support. Eisenhower's grandson, David Eisenhower, played a central role in the planning until December, he said, and the remaining commissioners still support the design.

"This probably tells a story of a man's greatness better than any other memorial," Geduldig said. "This is Eisenhower, a man who was born in the horse-and-buggy era and led America into the Space Age all in his lifetime. This is the dreams of a young man who then had the greatest resume of any president in history."

Still, Susan Eisenhower said her family's objections remain largely unanswered. She told the House panel that her family has been "inundated" with comments from the public and that the memorial should be redesigned.

"Great monuments in our country make simple statements that encapsulate the reason the memorial has been erected in the first place," she told the House panel.

The Washington Monument remembers George Washington as the "father of our country," and the Lincoln Memorial declares that Abraham Lincoln "saved the Union," she said. Meanwhile, she said, metal tapestries in the modern era were generally found in the Communist world.

"One of the main flaws of the current proposal is that Eisenhower's contribution to the nation is not the central theme of the design," Susan Eisenhower said. "The Eisenhower our nation wants to celebrate is not a dreamy boy but a real man who faced unthinkable choices, took personal responsibility and did his duty with modesty and humility."

She said survivors of the Holocaust have complained to the family that metal tapestries would look like chain-link fences, reminiscent of concentration camps. Others, she said, have said metal scrims would be an iron curtain, evoking Cold War imagery.

The family prefers a smaller, simple memorial, she said.

Rodney Cook, president of the Atlanta-based National Monuments Foundation, bemoaned Gehry's "narrative literalism" in representing Eisenhower's humble Kansas roots and trying to "redefine what it means to build a memorial."

"If you go with this new direction, we might as well tear down the Lincoln Memorial and put a log cabin there," he said.

The executive director of the memorial commission said that restarting the design process from scratch would cost at least $16 million and would delay the memorial by several years.

Many memorial designs have drawn criticism, including the World War II Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial. Divisions over the design of that memorial, including strong objections from the Roosevelt family, stalled the project for decades and led to three separate design competitions.

The congressional hearing could pressure memorial planners to make changes, but the House panel has no direct role in approving the design. Final approval of Gehry's concept from the National Capital Planning Commission, which approves architecture in the nation's capital, has been delayed amid the ongoing objections.

Several lawmakers Tuesday said they were reluctant to wade into the dispute.

"I can't help but feel we're micromanaging something well outside our purview," said Rep. Raul Grijalva of Arizona. "I don't think this subcommittee, the full committee or Congress is the appropriate place to litigate a memorial design or a potential family dispute."

Utah Rep. Rob Bishop, who called the hearing, said he hopes memorial organizers can achieve broad consensus because there's only "one chance to make this right." But Rep. John Garamendi of California said art is always controversial and some memorials remain so after they are built.

Organizers hope to break ground late this year on the $112 million project, which has received federal funding to start construction.
