Kane County Chronicle | District 303's Norris Recreation Center to ...

ST. CHARLES ? The mold found at the Norris Recreation Center last week has been remediated, allowing the fitness center to reopen Monday as planned pending final air sample results, St. Charles School District 303 Superintendent Don Schlomann said Friday.

The racquetball courts ? the area in which mold was discovered ? will remained closed, he said. He noted the area is safe, but the courts are unusable because several exterior walls have been stripped to their concrete masonry.

Mold was found in four exterior walls and a ceiling, Schlomann said. Officials initially believed the mold would be confined to one or two walls.

Architects studying the problem concluded poor design and deferred maintenance created conditions for water seepage.

In its report, architectural firm ATS&R said moisture tests indicated a high level of moisture in the concrete masonry unit and the exterior face brick.

?There was visible water present in the form of a drip from the bottom of a metal stud,? the firm wrote about its review of Court 3.

?? Viewing the exterior condition of the [face brick] revealed the presence of numerous deteriorated units and [damaged] mortar joints on both the northeast and northwest exterior walls.?

Because the racquetball courts were an addition to the original building, Schlomann said, the design flaws appear to be isolated to that area.

The design flaws included pieces of metal that divert water on the roof.

Air samples were taken from other areas of the rec center as well as neighboring St. Charles East High School, Schlomann said. He said all results have been fine.

The air samples and mold remediation cost D-303 about $100,000, Schlomann said.

Costs for a design fix are unknown. He said architects are researching options, which are expected to be presented to the school board?s Business Services Committee in September.

Schlomann said he was very pleased with the ?expeditious handling? of the situation and specifically thanked environmental consulting services firm Carnow, Conibear and Associates, ATS&R and district administrators John Baird and Brad Cauffman.

The district manages the Norris Recreation Center, which is at 1050 Dunham Road, but the facility is supervised by its own board of directors.

Attempts to reach Jon Monken, the facility?s executive director, were unsuccessful Friday.
