Golf: Gallacher in for Daly at Muirfield

Stephen Gallacher will play in next week's Open Championship after it was confirmed that John Daly is unable to participate.

Gallacher in for Daly at Muirfield

Daly was due to tee it up at Muirfield as a past winner of the event but will not play again this season after it was revealed that he needs to undergo surgery on an elbow injury.
The problem first surfaced at the Byron Nelson Championship back in May and scans revealed that he had a torn tendon in his right elbow.
Doctors told him that he could continue playing but must avoid hitting anything that might jolt his arm while swinging a club.
And that it exactly what happened at last week's Greenbrier Classic, as the burly American hit a tree root while attempting a 50-yard chip shot on the 12th.
He felt immediate pain and, after further consultation with doctors, was advised to shut it down for the rest of the 2013 campaign.
Daly's misfortune is Gallagher's gain as the Scot was first reserve for the year's third major and will now join the line-up at the East Lothian venue on July 18.
Daly was understandably frustrated at the news that he will not be able to play at one of his favourite events, saying: "I hate missing the British Open, especially at Muirfield. It's one of the best on the planet."

Texas officials OK more staffing for apparatus

The Eagle

BRYAN, Texas ? The Bryan City Council unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday evening that could increase minimum staffing levels for the fire department over the next 10 years.

Its passage was met with applause, both from firefighters who showed up at City Hall and from the council itself. The resolution states the city will now strive to increase the minimum staffing level to four firefighters on each truck, and give an aide to each battalion chief within the next decade.

?It provides more efficient operations ? obviously more people on the scene helps to do the job better and more safely,? said Bryan Fire Chief Randy McGregor. ?This is important to us.?

McGregor said the fire department currently staffs three firefighters on each truck, but many fire service regulatory agencies recommend staffing each truck with four. He said many cities nationwide strive to achieve a four-firefighter minimum staffing level on each truck.

By the time it is fully implemented in 2023, 33 new positions will be created. The staff increase would be funded through the general fund, and the approximate annual cost when fully implemented is $2 million in today?s dollars.

The number of positions that can be added each year will depend on how much funding is available. City Manger Kean Register said the city will be adding six new positions starting with the new fiscal year in October.

?It is a big commitment on the part of the city,? Register said. ?It does impact budget, but it?s something that we can do over a period of time.?

The resolution does not commit future councils to fund additional positions, but encourages them to continue increasing the staff each year.

McGregor said the fire department will begin staffing four firefighters on the ladder truck, which goes to every fire, and then start increasing staffing on the engines in the coming years.

?This department was good, but we?re gonna make it even better,? McGregor said. ?It?s just the next step in the process to keep the department moving forward.?

Bryan Mayor Jason Bienski thanked McGregor and fire department officials for their work.

?Our council is very supportive of our first responders,? Bienski said. ?Anything that?s better and safer and makes our department more efficient is important to us.?

5 MONEY SAVING TIPS FOR NEW COLLEGE GRADS

Guest contributor;?Anton Ivanov?

College graduation is fun and exciting. New grads are finally done with their education and are eager to embrace new opportunities. But graduation can be a very stressful time as well. Along with finding a new job, moving and adjusting to post-college life, new grads often face financial problems.

Many young people graduate with tens (or even hundreds) of thousands of student loan debt, have little or no savings and poor financial habits. But that doesn?t mean they can?t change their financial situation for the better. If you are a recent college graduate, following these 5 essential money saving tips will help you build a solid financial foundation.

Follow these tips to ward off financial problems!

Save money early; stuff your bank to the max

Save money early; stuff your bank to the max

?

1. Start Saving Early

Saving for emergencies or retirement may not be your most pressing concern. But it?s dangerous to put your saving efforts on the back burner. Every month and year lost can mean thousands of dollars less in your retirement account. And a lack of an emergency fund may have a big negative impact on your life and finances if you are not prepared.

Make a plan to save a portion of your paycheck each month right after graduating (or earlier, if possible). Be sure to pay yourself first ? save money before your other expenses eat away at your paycheck. The earlier you start saving, the wealthier you will ultimately become.

(Barb?s comment; I opened an IRA and started saving for retirement at age 23 and am sitting pretty as retirement approaches! A little bit of saving goes a long way!)

2. Control Your Spending

You may have gotten used to spending every dime of your part-time job?s pay in college. Now that your paycheck is much bigger, thanks to your full-time employment, you may be tempted to do the same. After all, all your friends are buying nice cars and expensive clothing, so why should you miss out on the fun?

(Barb?s comment; Because you will look back on that expensive car with disgust when you are eating beans in retirement!)

You can?t save money if you spend it all. If you want to reach your financial goals, such as become debt free and have a comfortable retirement, you need to have a budget. A budget will help you see where your money is going so you can figure out where your weaknesses lie. You don?t have to eliminate your expenses all at once ? cut back a little at a time.

(Barb?s comment; Buy a coffee maker, brew a thermos full of coffee, bring it to work and save $20-$30 per week!)

3. Every Little Bit Counts

Even after you eliminate unnecessary spending, you may not have much to save. This could be because your starting salary isn?t the greatest, or because your student loan payments take up a significant portion of your pay.

Don?t let this discourage you from saving altogether. Every little bit counts ? if you invest just a $200 a month for 40 years, you will have close to $525,000 (assuming an annual yield of 7%). Don?t be afraid to start small, and be consistent and disciplined. As your income grows and debts are getting paid off, you will have an opportunity to save more.

Build an emergency fund now!

Build an emergency fund now!

4. Emergency Fund is Key

Your emergency fund should be your first savings goal. Why? Because an unexpected event can happen to you at any time, no matter how young or healthy you are. If you are not financially prepared to handle an emergency, you will likely be forced to take out a loan to cover its costs.

Set an initial goal to save at least 6 months worth of expenses. Put that money in a high-yield savings account and don?t touch it unless you absolutely need it. Don?t be afraid to save more in the future as your financial situation changes (you start a family or have to support aging parents). And don?t forget to replenish your emergency fund after you dip in to it.

5. Don?t Forget About Debt Repayment

If you have student loans, credit card or other types of debt, create a debt repayment plan to get rid of it as quickly as possible. Loan and credit card payments cut into your income and limit your ability to save. The sooner you get out of debt, the sooner you will be able to save more money.

Make a list of your existing debts and pick one to focus on. It?s better to pay off high interest debt first (this will usually be your credit card debt). As your debts are getting paid off, roll over your debt repayment money into the next debt, then the next, and so on. This proven method of debt repayment will help you become debt free the fastest.

It?s also important to realize that you will not succeed at paying off your debt if you don?t stop accumulating more of it. A debt-free attitude will serve you well for the rest of your life.

The key to all of these money savings tips is being consistent and disciplined. If you succeed at that, you will build a strong financial foundation and will easily reach your financial goals.

What money staving tips do you have for new college grads?

Metta World Peace Interested in Knicks & Every Other Playoff Team in NBA

Metta World Peace Queensbridge

We all know that the artist formerly known as Ron Artest is from Queensbridge, so the Knicks makes sense if he is amnestied by the Lakers.

But in classic MWP fashion, he has a long list of potential destinations.

According to USA Today besides the Knicks, MWP is interested in Los Angeles Clippers, Brooklyn Nets, Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat, Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio Spurs and the Indiana Pacers.

No word on if any of these teams would be interested in him, but any team MWP is on, instantly becomes more interesting, don?t know if they become better, but definitely more entertaining.

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Two large Nevada wildfires advanced Tuesday through mountain areas near Las Vegas and southwest of Reno, while firefighters added resources and began looking to the weather to help quell flames.

Fifty firefighters were added to the effort at the Carpenter 1 Fire on Mount Charleston northwest of Las Vegas, bringing to more than 800 the number of personnel battling the blaze identified as the top priority in the West, U.S. Forest Service spokesman Jay Nichols said.

"We've got a fire running from 11,000 feet to about 5,000 feet," Nichols said of the elevation of the blaze sparked by lightning July 1 and still just 15 percent contained eight days later.

It's burning in pinion, juniper and bristlecone pine forest in rugged territory covering more than 30 square miles and continues to threaten about 400 homes. More than 500 residents and another 98 teenagers at a youth correctional camp have been evacuated since the weekend.

"It's dry," Nichols said. "We've got torching trees and spotting fire. We're being extremely careful and monitoring the safety of firefighters and the public."

In northern Nevada, the Bison fire grew Monday to 40 square miles in the Pine Nut Mountains near Gardnerville and Carson City. Fire spokeswoman Lisa Ross said one of the 720 firefighters on the lines suffered a knee injury. Containment was reported at 25 percent.

Fires were also burning across the West in California, where 100 mountain cabins were destroyed in San Diego County, and also in Alaska, Idaho and Arizona, where a memorial service is being held Tuesday for 19 firefighters killed in a wildfire north of Phoenix.

In Nevada, 19 elite Hotshot crews and 44 engine companies were battling the Carpenter 1 Fire some 25 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nichols said.

Smoke from the fire created a towering white cloud that stretched northeast, visible from downtown. The Clark County Department of Air Quality issued a health advisory that officials said would remain in effect through Sunday.

No injuries were reported in the southern Nevada fire that started July 1 on the west side of Mount Charleston near Pahrump and quickly spread east into rugged terrain reachable only on foot. Officials said Monday that some $2.4 million had already been spent fighting the fire.

Mount Charleston is a popular weekend getaway, where summer temperatures can be 15 to 20 degrees cooler than in Las Vegas, which has sizzled in the triple digits for more than 10 days.

More than 400 homes in Trout, Kyle, Lee, Harris Springs and Lovell canyons were evacuated during the weekend, along with a Clark County-run youth correctional camp that houses 98 teenagers at a mountain elevation of almost 8,500 feet above sea level. State highways 156 and 157 were closed into the canyons, and evacuation shelters were set up at schools in Las Vegas and Pahrump.

Crews were also working to protect about 100 non-residential structures including barns, sheds and corrals, Nichols said.

Daytime high temperatures on the mountain were expected to decrease over the next few days after peaking at 90 degrees on Saturday, but firefighters were still hampered by gusty winds and humidity levels in the single digits.

The Bison Fire in northern Nevada, which straddles the Douglas and Lyon county lines, nearly doubled in size Monday from a day earlier as it burned through tinder-dry brush, dead trees and pinion-juniper forests. By afternoon the fire was estimated at more than 27 square miles.

The mountain range also stretches into Carson City. Late in the day, fire officials closed popular back-country roads leading from the state capital into the mountains because of the fire's path.

No homes have been lost since the blaze broke out July 4, but officials said several old structures burned in the Slater Mine area.

More than 700 firefighters battled gusty winds, low humidity and temperatures in the 90s, Ross said.

NYSE operator takes over LIBOR bank rate

(AP) ? The company behind the New York Stock Exchange will take over running and restoring confidence in the scandal-hit London interbank offered rate, or LIBOR, a UK committee has ruled.

The independent panel, set up by the UK Treasury, on Tuesday chose NYSE Euronext to take over LIBOR from the British Bankers' Association, which had supervised the rate-setting for decades. The changeover is scheduled to be completed by early 2014, the panel's chair, Baroness Sarah Hogg, said in a statement. The panel did not identify other bidders.

"This change will play a vital role in restoring the international credibility of LIBOR," she said in a statement.

LIBOR underpins trillions of dollars of transactions all over the world. It is an average rate that measures how much they expect to pay each other for loans. The rate is also used in calculating borrowing costs of hundreds of trillions of dollars in loans and investments such as bonds, auto loans and derivatives.

But the rate was underpinned on trust ? an honor system that relied on the banks to be honest. Revelations of its manipulation last summer both shocked the financial community and forced a reform in how it was administered.

The scandal emerged when authorities realized banks ? including Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays and UBS ? were submitting false data to gain market advantages.

U.S. and U.K. regulators fined RBS more than $460 million for rate-rigging. Barclays' role led to a $453 million fine and the resignation of chief executive, Bob Diamond. Swiss bank UBS was fined $1.5 billion.

After the scandal erupted, the government moved to restore confidence in LIBOR's integrity, establishing the panel to review the rate and creating criminal penalties for those who violate the rules.

"We want to protect taxpayers and restore faith in financial services," financial secretary to the Treasury Greg Clark said in a statement.

"The government is committed to developing a safer and strong banking sector. We want a financial sector that serves the interests of business and helps to drive economic growth."

The rate will be administered by NYSE Euronext Rate Administration Limited, a new subsidiary of NYSE Euronext.

Jobs and the DMV Economy | Investing Caffeine

July 6, 2013 at 10:41 pm

Line of People

If you have ever gone to get your driver?s license at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)?you may still be waiting in line? It?s a painful but often a mandatory process, and in many ways the experience feels a lot like the economic recovery we currently have been living through over the last four years. Steady progress is being made, but in general, people hardly notice the economy moving forward.

My geographic neighbor and blogger here in Orange County, California (Bill McBride ? Calculated Risk) has some excellent visuals that compare our sluggish DMV economy with previous economic cycles dating back to 1948:

Source: Calculated Risk

Source: Calculated Risk

As you can see from the chart above, the current economic recovery (red-line), as measured by job losses, is the slowest comeback in more than a half-century. Basically, over a two year period, the U.S. lost about nine million jobs, and during the following three years the economy regained approximately seven million of those jobs ? still digging out of the hole. Last Friday?s June jobs report was welcomed, as it showed net jobs of +195,000 were added during the month, and importantly the previous two months were revised higher by another +70,000 jobs. These data points combined with last month?s Fed?s QE3 tapering comments by Ben Bernanke help explain why the continued rout in 10 year Treasury rates has continued in recent weeks, propelling the benchmark rate to 2.71% ? almost double the 1.39% rate hit last year amidst continued European financial market concerns.

As with most recessions or crashes, the bursting of the bubble (i.e., damage) occurs much faster than the inflation (i.e., recovery), and McBride?s time series clearly shows this fact:

Source: Calculated Risk

Source: Calculated Risk

While pessimists point to the anemic pace of the current recovery, the glass half-full people (myself included) appreciate that the sluggish rebound is likely to last longer than prior recoveries. There are two other key dynamics underlying the reported employment figures:

  • Continued Contraction in Government Workers:?Excessive government debt and deficits have led to continued job losses ? state and local job losses appear to be stabilizing but federal cuts are ongoing.
  • Decline in the Labor Force Participation Rate:? Discouraged workers and aging Baby Boomer demographics have artificially lowered the short-term unemployment figures because fewer people are looking for work. If economic expansion accelerates, the participation contraction trend is likely to reverse.

Skepticism Reigns Supreme

Regardless of the jobs picture and multi-year expansion, investors and business managers alike remain skeptical about the sustainability of the economic recovery. Anecdotally I encounter this sentiment every day, but there are other data points that bolster my assertion. Despite the stock market more than doubling in value from the lows of 2009, CNBC viewer ratings are the weakest in about 20 years (see Value Walk) and investments in the stock market are the lowest in 15 years (see Gallup poll chart below):

Source: Gallup

Source: Gallup

Why such skepticism? Academic research in behavioral finance highlights innate flaws in human decision-making processes. For example, humans on average weigh losses twice as much as gains as economist and Nobel prizewinner Daniel Kahneman explains in his book Thinking Fast and Slow (see Investing Caffeine article: Decision Making on Freeways and in Parking Lots). Stated differently, the losses from 2008-2009 are still too fresh in the minds of Americans. Until the losses are forgotten, and/or the regret of missing gains becomes too strong, many investors and managers will fearfully remain on the sideline.

The speed of our economic recovery is as excruciatingly agonizing, and so is waiting in line at the DMV. The act of waiting can be horrific, but obtaining a driver?s license is required for driving and investing is necessary for retirement. If you don?t want to go to investing jail, then you better get in the investing line now before job growth accelerates, because you don?t want to be sent to the back of the line where you will have to wait longer.

Two former union leaders accused of padding worker hours during Walker recall

MILWAUKEE - An investigation is underway into two former union bosses accused of using the recall effort against Governor Walker to steal from its national arm.The report says an investigation into the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 998, which represents bus drivers in Milwaukee County, is finding evidence of financial abuse. Two of the Union's former bosses are accused of overstating the number of hours staffers were working on the Walker recall, according to the Journal Sentinel's Dan Bice. The national union was reimbursing those hours, and the report alleges the local union would claim that an employee had worked more hours than they actually did, and then pocketed the difference. The two accused of the crime are also accused of credit card abuses.

Parents: Pharmacy handed out pill bottles with candy during parade

FAITH, NC (WBTV) -

A Rowan County couple says they are outraged after a local pharmacy company handed out pill bottles filled with candy during a 4th of July parade.

Donald Hobart?called the WBTV newsroom on Friday morning and said Price Pharmacy in Granite Quarry handed out the pill bottles with Skittles inside during the parade in Faith on Thursday.

"As they come by, they threw this prescription bottle out for kids; my grandkids and my friends' kids," Donald Hobart said.

"My four-year-old son brought it to me and I immediately took it from him," Heather Hobart told WBTV. "I don't think a child is going to know the difference. They are going to see a bottle and say 'My last bottle had candy in it and let's go home and get in mama and daddy's medicine cabinet and see if there is candy in there'."

Price Pharmacy, which is a fairly new business in Granite Quarry, told WBTV the pill bottles weren't aimed at marketing to children.

The owner?says they threw out loose candy to children and specifically handed the pill bottles to adults.?

He says he thinks this mother misunderstood their intentions. Out of the nearly 30,000 parade goers, this was the only complaint.

The bottles are blue and the label has information about the store's hours and location.?The most common pharmacy medication bottle is orange.

"The intent was to use something like a medicine bottle. By using a different color, they thought this would not lead to confusion. But if someone can't read, color may not be the only?distinguishing thing they would use to recognize what something is," said Interim Executive Director of the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists?Fred Eckel.

"It's nice to market your services as a pharmacy," he continued."We want people to be aware of who we are and what we do, but this perhaps may not be best practice."

"One of our big prevention points is 'medicine is not candy'," said Dr. Anna Dulaney, a Medical Toxicologist with Carolinas Poison Center. "Teach your child that medicine is not candy because there are medicines that look like candy. The use of skittles is even kind of worse in this setting."

Dulaney says about half of the drug exposures that the Center sees are in children under the age of 6.

"A growing problem is?adolescent substance abuse and we already know from some of the focus groups we've had from teenagers?locally - they already feel like prescription drug abuse is no big deal," Dulaney said.

The pharmacy and parade organizers say no other people complained about the candy bottles.

An organizer of the event did say parade participants tell them what they are going to pass out, but says the pharmacy did not make it clear the type of container the candy was going to be in.

She says it does raise concern and would have probably told them it was not a good idea.

The pharmacy says it won't be advertising like this again.

Faith Parade organizers are?not upset with Price Pharmacy and welcome the business' support of the event.

Officials say the pharmacy has done nothing illegal and the Hobart family is the family who has come forward to complain.

Changes to California's drug crime laws

July 06, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) recently issued a holding on a case involving the use of a drug-sniffing dog during a traffic stop. During a routine traffic stop, the officer noticed an open beverage in the vehicle. The officer requested a search of the vehicle and the driver declined. In response, the officer brought his narcotics trained dog around the vehicle to conduct a "free-air sniff search."

During the sniff search the dog alerted to the presence of illegal substances. Based on the dog's alert, the officer argued he had probable cause to conduct a full search of the vehicle. The search led to the finding of various substances used in the production of methamphetamine, resulting in drug crime charges against the driver of the vehicle.

The law protects against unreasonable searches

The issue in this case was whether the use of a narcotics trained dog to sniff around the car was a violation of the driver's Fourth Amendment rights. The Fourth Amendment offers basic protections against unreasonable searches. An officer cannot simply pull someone over at random and demand a full search of his or her vehicle. Probable cause for violation of the law must exist before such a search can be conducted.

In this instance, the narcotic dog used to conduct the sniff search had a history of false positive alerts. The driver argued the dog was unreliable due to these false positive alerts. If the dog was unreliable, the search that followed the alert would be illegal. If the search was illegal, any evidence would not be allowed in court and removal of evidence could lead to a dismissal of charges.

Ultimately, the Court held that drug-sniffing dogs need to complete training in order to be considered reliable. Once training and certification is completed, a dog's alert is enough to support a more thorough search.

Keeping up on changing drug crime laws in California

Based on this holding, a narcotic dog's alert may be unreliable if proper training is not completed. As a result, those who find themselves facing drug charges based on a drug-sniffing dog's alert should review the dog's training to ensure his or her right against an unreasonable search was not violated.

In addition to carefully reviewing drug charges connected to the use of a narcotics dog, it is also important to be aware of potential changes to drug laws in California. Senator Mark Leno from the San Francisco area is pushing the state to adjust its drug laws, allowing those accused of drug possession crimes to be charged as misdemeanors instead of felonies. He argues the change would reduce overpopulation in the state's jails and ease the pressures placed on the state court system. Overall, he contends this could save the state of California millions.

How SCOTUS holdings and potential changes in law impact you

The proposed change by Senator Leno and the holding issued by SCOTUS highlight two ways drug laws are influenced in California. Because of the state's evolving drug laws, those charged with a drug crime should contact an experienced California drug crime lawyer to better ensure their legal rights are protected.

Pink Dryer Lint: In the Spirit of Home Improvement (what Post-Its ...

When I was in high school, I volunteered regularly?with Habitat for Humanity.??For three summers I joined?dozens of people on a week-long work camp to raise rafters, paint house exteriors, or drywall.? During my senior year, I worked?at a local house on Saturday mornings, helping with spackling?and painting.

Although I didn't realize it then, gaining experience with these rudimentary construction?projects has?given me confidence with the do-it-yourself projects that I've faced as a homeowner.

That being said, I'm still learning little tricks of the trade.? For example, I've discovered that the use of a simple Post-It note?makes drilling virtually mess-free.? Simply bend a Post-It, adhere it to the wall below your drill marks, and let the drywall dust be neatly caught by the Post-It instead of falling to the floor.

It's foolproof, unless you drop the Post-It and spill all of?the drywall dust that it had so cleverly captured while you're attempting to throw it away, which is what I recently did.? (Note to self: cradle that Post-It carefully as you move about.)

My other tip is one I'm quite proud of.? When I recently hung curtains, I noticed that they didn't drape well at the bottom.? Because the fabric was lightweight, the bottom edges billowed outward instead of falling straight downward.

I brainstormed how I could fix this easily and inexpensively, and I came up with these homemade weights by stacking a few pennies, gluing them together, and adhering them to a paper clip.??Each weight costs only four cents (literally), and they?unobtrusively fasten to the curtain's inner hem.?

The result is that my curtains now drape beautifully.? As an added bonus, if I'm ever?desperately short on petty change, I instantly know where I can find a stash of coins.
?

Soon, I'll share with you my before-after pictures from my tray table project, which is one of my final house goals for the summer.? It's been a good run.

Do you have a favorite tip?? Share it with us!

Info. Technology - Regional - Apple requests iWatch trademark in Mexico, Colombia, Chile

Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) has requested a trademark for iWatch with Mexico's industrial property institute IMPI, Apple product information portal 9to5 Mac reported.

The company has also filed for iWatch trademarks in Colombia and Chile in Latin America, as well as countries such as Turkey, Russia and Japan.

The trademark is related to Apple's smart watch project which is nearly ready to be released, according to international press.

The company's main competitor in the smartphone segment, South Korean electronics firm Samsung, is also thought to be developing a smart watch, and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) has been rumored to be producing a similar device to compete with Apple.

In Latin America, the company has reason to take trademark issues seriously following embarrassing lawsuits in both Mexico and Brazil.

During 2012, Mexican telecoms firm iFone successfully fended off a lawsuit from Apple regarding brand name infringement, and then counter sued the tech giant on the same grounds.

Meanwhile, Apple lost the rights to the iPhone brand in Latin America's largest market, Brazil, earlier this year to local electronics manufacturer Gradiente, which took the market by surprise in December 2012 when it launched a smartphone line under the brand name IPHONE.

The Brazilian firm argued that it had filed for and acquired the rights to register and sell its devices under the IPHONE brand in the country 12 years previous - well before Apple's iPhone.

    Why Fireworks Depend on Geology

America is about to blow up a bunch of stuff for its 237th birthday. I love it! Who doesn?t love fireworks? Well, aside from my childhood dog, who invariably hid under the bed in cowering terror. And people who have had enough of explosions to last them a lifetime. People who don?t like loud bangs. People who are phobic about fire. All right, so there?s a long list of people and other animals and possibly plants who don?t like fireworks. But hopefully most of this audience does, and even if you can?t stand ?em, perhaps you like geology, chemistry, physics, and pretty colors. Fireworks have got them all.

Fantastic fireworks display, courtesy of Bayasaa on Flickr.

Oh, yeah, definitely geology. There?d be no fireworks without geology. Geologist High Maintenance Mom provides a great overview of the science of fireworks, explaining in kid-friendly ways how physics, chemistry and geology combine to create pyrotechnic magic. She?s a great resource to start with if you want to make your trip to see the fireworks show a fun teachable moment for your kids.

A very gorgeous burst of fireworks by Nigel Howe on Flickr.

A very gorgeous burst of fireworks by Nigel Howe on Flickr.

For a more adult-oriented overview, see this excellent article on Geology.com. Lots of diagrams and nifty information, including this section regarding how geology fits in. Those beautiful colors wouldn?t be there if geologists weren?t finding the minerals that create them:

    What Causes the Colors?

Chemistry holds the secrets to the color of a fireworks burst. The colors that you see in the sky are determined by metal salts that are deliberately added in very small amounts to the stars when they are manufactured.

As the stars burn the metal atoms absorb energy, become excited and emit a specific color of light. Some of the metals that produce the colors of fireworks are tabulated here.

Go memorize that article so that you can pull a complete geek on your friends. While other people are screaming ?Oooo! Ahhhh! Wow!? you can shout, ?Titanium! Copper! Strontium!?

Ooo, I know this one! Image courtesy Nigel Howe on Flickr.

Ooo, I know this one! Image courtesy Nigel Howe on Flickr.

Strontium plus copper! Copper! Maybe some sodium!

Speaking of sodium, did you know you can do an awesome flame test using stuff you can pick up at the grocery store? Check out llinois State Museum Geology Online?s ?A Burst of Light (pdf)? lesson ? this is something you can, with proper precautions, do safely at home or in the classroom. And there?s more information on the minerals and colors in fireworks at this pdf from the U.S. Bureau of Mines.

So take a geology field trip if you?re in the States today and go see a fireworks display. Raise a beer to the geologists whose ability to unearth (ha) minerals made the whole thing possible. And drink a toast to the chemists and physicists and pyromaniacs who also helped.

Deans faces axe as Wallabies coach

Wallabies coach Robbie Deans watches his side train. Source: Cameron Spencer / Getty Images

THE Wallabies could have a new coach before the Rugby Championship with growing speculation even an historic win over the Lions tonight won?t secure Robbie Deans' job.

ARU boss Bill Pulver stressed this week that Deans' future "does not hinge on the Lions series" but the drums have been beating loudly in recent days the Kiwi?s six-season tenure will draw to a close after Saturday; win, lose or draw.

Deans' replacement would come from two candidates: Queensland?s Ewen McKenzie or Brumbies and former Springboks coach Jake White.

McKenzie has long been considered the popular heir apparent for the Wallaby coaching role, after taking the Reds to a Super Rugby title in 2011.?

But White?s claims have grown this year among some powerbrokers, and long-time ally Eddie Jones speculated publically this week the South African could take over from Deans on a two-year contract until the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

It is understood the Melbourne Rebels are waiting on the ARU?s decision regarding Deans? future, with the franchise keen to bring McKenzie back to Victoria if he misses out on the top job.

McKenzie said last night he was unaware of any movement on Deans? position ? "you?re asking the wrong bloke" ? and while stressing his belief he was amply qualified to coach the Wallabies, the outgoing Reds coach said he would keep the door open on the Rebels option.

"I have upfront with my intentions the whole way, I have stated I would like a crack at international level," McKenzie said.

"My CV is pretty diverse. I have a fair bit of experience now, I have been a head coach at Super level for ten years, and was involved with the Wallabies prior to that. I have been around a fair while, but in the end, I have no say in any of that. It?s a process run by the ARU."

McKenzie said his focus was to pursue international coaching experience but he was a ?never say never" man when it came to other jobs.

"The Rebels has held interest for me in the past. My hometown, and it?s the type of job I?ve done in the past, building a team up," McKenzie said.

"These things come down to timing, often. You just have to see what happens."

Is the 4.7-inch HTC One not the right size for your hands? Do Nokia's latest Lumia phones not appeal to your design sensibilities? Well, a leaked document from O2 Germany lists four unannounced devices reportedly coming out later this year that just might satisfy your very particular tastes. Gross, Here Are 5 Toxic Chemicals in Your Food

You know what I hate about eating? The constant conversation on whether this food is good for you or bad for you. It seems to change everyday! New reports say this will cause cancer. Other reports say the same thing can prevent it. Even awful food that contains arsenic and other toxic chemicals can be somehow reasoned to be not as bad for you. This video by BuzzFeed shows you what's toxic inside the food you eat (birthday cake! chicken!) but how it isn't all that bad for you either. Let's just either eat what's delicious or not eat at all! Silver Shows Mettle Against Bacteria

    60-Second Science

Microbes exposed to a small amount of silver become more vulnerable to antibiotic attack. Karen Hopkin reports.

    More 60-Second Science

If you?re plagued by werewolves, reach for the silver. And more mundane health problems may also respond well to the silver solution. Because a new study shows that microbes exposed to a pinch of the precious metal become more vulnerable to antibiotic attack. The research is in the journal Science Translational Medicine. [Jose Ruben Morones-Ramirez et al, Silver Enhances Antibiotic Activity Against Gram-Negative Bacteria]

Silver?s long been a medical treatment. Hippocrates himself applied it to open wounds. But its use as a cure for contagion fell by the wayside with the discovery of penicillin, and the source of its bug-blasting abilities remained a mystery. Until now.

Researchers treated E. coli bacteria with small amounts of silver. They found that the metal messes with the bugs? proteins, wreaking havoc on their metabolism. It also generates reactive chemicals that attack the microbes from within. All this weakens the bacteria?s defenses, which allows other, more conventional antibiotics to slip in and do their work. Even killing microbes that were formerly antibiotic resistant.

Mice with fatal infections were also saved with a silver and antibiotic combo, and at doses that did the sick rodents no harm. This silver was delivered by injection. For werewolves, the preferred silver delivery system is still the bullet.
